Should I bring Pip inside?

edited July 2009 in General Discussion
When I got home, my dad told me not to let the cat out because a baby bird was kicked out of his nest, well I went searching for them to see if the mom ever came back, [she didn't] and now there is two of them. ;-;
Good thing I have tons of insects that I can feed them from my lizard.
They are tiny little blue jays, and the mom hasn't came back or taught them to fly. My dad said they learn on thier own and I said no they don't. 0_o Well, anyways if they don't get to flying by dark we are going to bring them inside so none of the stray cats or any other wild beast eats them.

I gots pictures of them. >:D

<img src="http://i32.tinypic.com/339pqtf.jpg"; alt="http://i32.tinypic.com/339pqtf.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

<img src="http://i30.tinypic.com/kc1fdv.jpg"; alt="http://i30.tinypic.com/kc1fdv.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

 • The mom never came back. But, a woodpecker is out there feeding them and everytime a puff of wind comes they lift thier wings in attempt to fly, it's so cute. xD
 • Ahww! I wish I could see it! xD

That's not unusual. I think I have it right, but often times, blue jays will lay their eggs in the nests of other birds. Then the other birds will raise the jay babies, thinking they're their own, and when the jay babies get big enough, they'll knock the pecker babies out of the nests. It's harsh, but that's the way it is.

At least, I think I'm getting the bird species right.

We kept them over night, becuase they still have'nt flown off and the cats from the neighboors house came over.
But, I got up first thing this morning and let them out of the nest I made them and a blue jay is out there feeding them now.
But, I don't believe it isn't the mother, she has a nest with newborns in it in ourneighboors yard.
And when the blue jay isn't around I feed them watered down cat food, I heard [and researched] that baby birds eat that as well.
I named them pip & squeak.
We think pip might be sick, she is runt like and hasn't been getting fed by the other birds as much as squeak.
But, this morning she seemed very well rested and has been getting fed today. :]
I have also tryed helping them fly by pearching them on trees and they swoop down but haven't got the hang of flying yet.

Pip is the one in the front and Sqeak is the one in the back.
<img src="http://i25.tinypic.com/2zp4gon.jpg"; alt="http://i25.tinypic.com/2zp4gon.jpg"; class="bb-image" />
 • Squeak died.
He was out this morning hoping around, learning to fly and eating.
But the neighboors cat came over and got him, I chased her down but he died. :[
My heart came out my throat when I saw the helpless thing.
Now I'm wondering if I should bring the other one inside.
I have school work to do and I can't stay outside all day.
What should I do?
Pip is not leaving my sight at all today.
 • If pip's not scared of you, bring him inside.

 • I am making a nest for it, to bring inside.
Pip lets me near her and feeed her.
I just don't want to stress the blue jay that is taking care of it.
 • Well it'll most likely either get over heated or too cold on the ground depending on your location. They're used to being in a tree. If he's fine with you, take him inside. If he stops eating inside, put him back out.

 • Okay, I will do that.
Thanks!
I will do some online research as well.
 • Online will most likely be more accurate than me. xD I was mainly thinking of my aunt who is this certified bird rescue/sanctuary.

 • Okay, that's good. I was thinking of calling one if I can find any in the phoneboook. xD

Maybe you could ask your aunt what i should do?
 • I know what she'd say.
--
*mocking voice*

It's illeagal to pick a bird out of it's natural habitat. Bring it to a sanctuary where we know how to deal with it.
--
But there's usually no sanctuary where most people live. I'd have to drive an hour to get to her. >.> Just make it a nest and feed it. xD That's what she'd do. I have geckos and they have mealworms, beetles, and crickets. That's what she usually uses. Mostly mealworms though.

Oh, and red worms.

 • That's why I am glad to have a lizard, I have mealworms and I heard you can also use watered down cat food.
But, it is very hot out and I don't how often she's getting fed, so It's probably best to keep her inside and cool.
I'll let her out when it cools down and when I get done with school. xD
I do know they have to be fed at the most every 30 minutes.
 • Wow. you aren't getting any sleep tonight. : P

 • I know. xD
I woke up early early early this morning to let them hop around out of thier box.
[they where in a box overnight so that they could still get fed and not eaten.]
they where out of the cats reach of course.
I just feel bad for poor little squeak.
 • Anyone else?
She's eating this cat food pretty well. xD
