Help-Horse people

OK so I am getting very worried I am in 4-H and this is my first year showing my horse I am very stressed out as I have had my horse barley a year and she doesn't know half the stuff needed to show. She is 8 years old but hadn't been ridden in over 2 years when I got her and was extremely green broke so I have been just trying to put miles on her and make her a better horse. Now I am a month away from county fair and am panicking my horse has never done pleasure before she is a game horse never done anything requiring her to go really slow.
I was wondering if someone out there can help me I want to do good if its advice just encouragement will help. If you know of any good training methods please tell me.

Also my horse doesn't like bits but I have to ride her in a curb bit for pleasure can anybody recommend a good bit that will work I have tried these bits on her with no luck I am not sure what it is I need with her(Shes a Morgan)
<a href="http://www.horseloverz.com/STA-BRITE-Stainless-Steel-Training-Snaffle-Bit-Stainless-Steel-5-pr-185431.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.horseloverz.com/STA-BRITE-Stainless-Steel-Training-Snaffle-Bit-Stainless-Steel-5-pr-185431.html
<a href="http://www.horseloverz.com/STA-BRITE-Chrome-Tom-Thumb-Snaffle-Bit-Chrome-plated-5-pr-185458.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.horseloverz.com/STA-BRITE-Chrome-Tom-Thumb-Snaffle-Bit-Chrome-plated-5-pr-185458.html-But with copper rollers

 • Mkay im not a horse person at all and am not claiming to be.
I bought one and had it for about eight months, got thrown, the horse was just unmanageable. so i sold her.

But when i was working with her, i was told to use a snaffle bit. They're smaller and easier to work with.

Maybe that would help? lol

 • I'm not the most knowledgable person on horses either, but I've been looking into them and all there tack, and ways to train, etc because after I get mi car, dog and house I plan on getting a horse.

I would recommend:
-making sure you're above your horse in heirarchy (sp?) for anything and making sure your horse trusts you.
as for the pleasure riding-i found a few decent looking sites with Q&A's on them most specifically about how to train it. though, alot of them said that horses that do well in barrel racing, hunting, etc don't normally do well with western pleasure, but it's possible; so don't give up.
here's a couple sites i just looked up:
<a href="http://horsemanship101.com/Letters/Training-Western-Pleasure-Horse-46.html"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://horsemanship101.com/Letters/Trai ... se-46.html
<a href="http://equisearch.com/horses_riding_training/western/pleasure/jog_aid_091108/" target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://equisearch.com/horses_riding%5 ... %5F091108/
btw-the last site has just about everything I had been looking for.

hope that helped..but if it didn't, oh well, atleast I tried. :?

 • xD I've showed a LOT when i was younger.
I don't anymore because of school and my show horse is getting old.

But 4-H lemme say can be pure stress full. -
I've been it for like a month and I was tired of it,
I just went indepent for showing.

Pleasure is pretty easy even on a green broke.
Just focus on everything that's going around you,
and make sure your horse is doing what its suppose to be doing.
If your nervous the horse is nervous.
It is proven that a horse can feel your nerves when you ride-
If the horse makes a mistake and acts up (if your aren't nervous) correct it.
I'm sure your 4-H leaders will no approve but if you don't correct the horse (since its partly green broke) right away on the spot, it will not learn from it.
Correcting it later, it won't understand what its being corrected for (from experience, trust me)
I understand loosing your place in the event for getting a ribbon but there are plenty of other shows out there that you could win if you corrected that problem in class rather the horse doing it every event in the future.

XD
i hope that helps.. sorry bout the rambling on- ^.^ I get very excited with horse stuff!

EDIT_ and i'm not to smart with bits! Most shows I went too never made you drop the bit so I cheated a lot ;D I did such things for my horse to be comfy with the bit.

If you HAVE to use that bit, i would suggest getting a bridle or such that is safe to have the bit on and leaving it on the horse for a couple hours a day or even all day (unless you have to drive to a boarding place) xD

 • Thank You guys so much I wold go to VHR but everybody there was really rude and mean before when I asked questions.
 • Okay. First. thing is to RELAX. My horse is around six or eight and very green. The best thing to do is just to relax, spend time with your horse and once that calm energy is down, work on the moves needed one at a time. If you have your own arena, work in there only going appropraite show gaits and speeds. Even better, if you get everything down i would trailer her over to the show grounds and work there a few times if it would be possible. You know how you need that high energy and excitement to make a barrel horse go fast and get hyped? Its like that but in reverse. Just relax and don't stress, and teach her what she needs to know very calmly and very fun. They pick up on that super quick.
Winning doesn't need to be everything. Make goals. Like for the first show just make the goal that she doesn't get overexicted about being in the arena.

And you can accomplish everything in a snaffle, pretty much. I understand. River HATES bits, but Journey used to go perfectly in a huge shank bit that he really liked better than a snaffle.

 • I would ride in a snaffle bit but I was looking at the stat rule book for 4-h and it has to be a curb bit. I was going to use a bosal hackamore seeing I use a hack for games but you can only use that and a snaffle bit if the horse is under the age of 5
