Why is it..

That dogs have a difficult time sitting when they are lying down?

Like, when I tell Tucker "Down" then tell him to "sit" he wont sit, like he doesnt understand it, but he knows what sit means.

I have been working on him with this, because he needs to know how to do it for Obedience... but, it still isnt registering to him xD Usually he picks things up fairly fast. I still have to like, step into him and use hand gestures and everything, and even that sometimes doesnt work. He just looks at me like, "Erm.. what are you doing?" xD

Dunno, just a question I was wondering about o.o

 • try holding it above his nose and use a different command. Thats how i taught Scout. Using the same command for something that is COMPLETELY different from what he's used to doing will confuse him.
 • I always though Bella figured that if she was already comfortable, why get up? xD

Yeah, I was thinking of using Up. And I did hold it above his nose xD He just laid down and stared at it, lmao.

Im thinking that may be it Dreamy! You should see the way he lays down xD He leans to one side and looks pretty comfortable.

=O I went to go get a picture of his laziness, and when I told him sit, he did it! xD the picture was blurry though, because my dad messed with it and made the shutter speed super slow >.<

 • I don't know if your question has been answered but I've found my dogs have trouble with that too xD I think it's because "sit" is a form of telling them to get down, so when they go all the way down and you say "sit", they're thinking "I'm already down, you crazy"...

Just my own thoughts xD
 • I've got a german shepherd that i got when he was around 3.
I was told he was the most problematic dog and was good for nothing.
So they sold him to me for $100.

I left him at my grandfather's, we bred him once and he threw some awesome pups.
but noone ever really tried to train him..

So about a year ago i was bored and taught him to sit, shake, etc...
He learned really quick...
Point of the story is....

That when i have him lay down, i put the treat right in front of his nose and say up and just drag the treat up to where his nose would be if he were sitting, when he sits i pet him and lower the treat back down to the floor and do it again...

Took him a few times, but he finally learned

Yeah, Im thinking that might be it xD He gives me the look he gives when hes waiting for his click&treat.

And Buffy, I tried dragging the treat from his nose up, but he didnt sit up xD He just kept looking at me like I was a nut. xD

Next training session I will try to use Up. Though, I had no success luring him with a treat xD I had to wait until he was close to the ground, but not all the way laid down, then I had to kind of step into him a little (he knows back up, so when i do that he sits up before getting up to back up) Hm... I will try everything possible xD

The other issue we're having, is for Rally Obedience, when they heel, they either have to sit, down or stand when you stop walking. Tucker is ace at sitting at my side, but now I cant get him to stand up xDDD I think most of our issues at this point are because of routine. Perhaps thats why he doesnt sit back up when he lies down - hes so used to that just being it, he doesnt understand that there can be another step behind it.

He also likes to spin when I dont want him to xD So, if we do Rally and he gets frustrated, I hope he doesnt start spinning around o.O

 • Actually thinking about it, it could be sort of like training in certain enviroments. When we had a few rainy days, I started teaching Bell to push a soccer ball with her nose, but when we went outside to work on it, she acted like I was crazy. So it waas back to square one out there.
So I dunno, maybe it's like that with Tucker, but he thinks that sit only means going down(like Dusty said), and not going up.

 • D: hunter epicly fails compared(sp?) to your dog nickel. xD i tell him to sit.. he lies down. e.e and whenever i tell him to sit he puts his paw out after he sits.. well he used to xD he's better now.

o.o; but the biggest thing that bugs me.. >.< is that he knows sit, stay(x3 he will hold a sit&stay for a while and while hold it until i get about.. 40-ish ft away), down, paw/other paw. great. :\ but when i tell him 'paw' and he puts his paw in my hand.. he then gets up from his sit position. its like 'really dog. you were fine just sitting. nothing else happens after you give me your paw that involves you standing up.' :\ it bugs the heck outa me.

>.>; and the second thing that bugs the heck outa me is that he walks perfectly with me now that i got the halti.. that is, when its just me walking him. if my dad is with him on a walk he acts like i dont exist. he just wants to walk with him. the halti doesnt seem to have any affect on him whatsoever. :\

Is your dog walking ahead of you? Dogs like to be in the front of the walk, they dont like to be pushed to the back, so if someone in your family is walking ahead, they will pull to get with them. Its better if you all walk alongside each other.

And the thing with his paw, it may be because he's excited =P When my dogs get frustrated, they start pulling every trick they have on me. I have also had Tucker stand to throw his paw at me, but he was way over hyper, and I probably shouldnt have been working with him. I usually let my dogs out to play, then work with them at a later time after they have gotten their excercise and cooled off.

Also, try repeating stay, stay, stay ,while you have him shaking your hand, so he remains in the sit position, or repeat for him to sit, so he understands he's supposed to be sitting. Tucker used to get up from his down when I clicked the clicker (which he cant do that in obedience) so I would just say "Down" again right after clicking, so he remembered he was supposed to stay down.

Lol, he doesnt fail kro. He's a hyper lab xD

And Dreamy, Tucker used to do some things only outside, and wouldnt do them inside. (kind of like when your dog would only do that in the rain).

I work outside for the most part, and we have our weave poles outside. So, when I took him to an indoor trial, he totally ignored the weave poles, when he does them perfect in the yard all the time. >.> He does them indoors now, but he was used to that being an outdoor thing, so i guess they didnt matter to him indoors xD No clue where that thinking comes from either.
