anybody have any crate training ideas?
none of the techniques that i have been told work on my puppy.
he whines 24/7 when he is in the crate,
if i take him out to go potty he thinks it's play time and wont potty.
i only got 4 hours of sleep last night because he whines so much.
and no one will help me take care of him,
everyone just smothers him with kisses and playing but when he starts getting on everyones nerves they brush him off on me.

  • try putting him in with a treat, so that he associates going in the crate with treats.

you could also try giving him a blanket with your scent etc. on it, so that he feels comforted when he's in there.

whenever there are pups in my house, they whine when they are in their cage, but usually stop after a while.

when he's in there, ignore him completely, don't even look at him, and don't give him any attention whatsoever when he whines.
soon he'll realise that whining doesn't get what he wants.

  • Take him outside as much as possible. When I first got my Great Dane puppy I took him out at least every 30 minutes. When he used it outside I freaked out and praised him like crazy. :P You're supposed to bring them out like every hour, right after every meal, right after playing, and just any time they look like they might have to go. lol

They say however many months old the dog is that's how many hours he can hold his bladder. I don't know if that's true for really young puppies but at around 4 months old they should be able to hold it for 3-4 hours even though they shouldn't have to.

Give him stuff to play with in the crate. I'm sure it gets boring in there.. How would you like to be enclosed in a tiny box for hours? :P Do you cover his crate? I've never used a crate because I don't really like the idea but I've heard if you cover the crate with a blanket it helps the dog go to sleep. That way he isn't able to see you and want to be with you constantly, you know?

Good luck with your puppy! It's hard now but once he's grown up you're going to miss the puppy days. Oh, and if you're the only one taking care of him he'll be closer to you. :P I raised my dog totally by myself and now he's like my shadow.. it's great. :D

  • Why is he in the crate so much? Was this at night when he was crying and stuff?

he sleeps for hours during the day in his bed,
and i do cover the crate, but that makes it even worse.
my other dog jewels was never like this when she was a puppy,
she slept a full 8 hours before she woke up.
i only use the crate for night time and to help potty train.

  • he plays all day with my friends other dogs if they are around,
i took him to the beach last night and walked him quite a ways and he crashed as soon as we got in the car,
but when i put him in the crate it's like world war 3.
i would let him sleep wherever he likes, but if he doesn't wake me up i wont know to take him out and he will pee in the house.

  • Maybe he's just getting used to the schedule? Puppies are hard work. :P You can't compare this dog to Jewels or expect him to be like her. No two dogs are alike.. They're all different just like people. lol

How often do you feed him and does he have access to water all the time? How often do you take him outside to potty when he's not sleeping?

-edit-
I just saw your pictures of him! He's really adorable!!

i don't expect him to be like her. ;D
i was just stating a fact.
i feed him three times a day, he's on a very strict schedule until he is fully potty trained, he has acess to water all day.
but, after 8 or 9 P.M. i don't let him drink anymore that way he won't have to realieve himself every 5 seconds during the night.
when he is not sleeping i take him out every 30 minutes to an hour,
and sometimes even then he doesn't have to potty, he ends up playing with leaves and the cat.

  • Tough love. When we had Addison we crate trained her from day one. We had also cut off her water at a certain time after her dinner. We covered her crate but sometimes she would whine still. You have to ignore it. Don't even go near the cage or talk to him. It may be incredibly annoying but just try not to do anything. He may think he's being rewarded for his whining if you let him out other than the bathroom and other essential needs. Normally when I would get Addie out for the day, I would wait until she was quiet before I took her out.

And did you say he was potty trained already? How old is he again?

  • Where is his crate located? Is it in your room? If not, maybe you should move it there so he can at least see you and know you haven't completly deserted him. If he whines, try the best you can to completly ignore him. Take him out to the bathroom when he's quiet.

  • he's for the most part potty trained,
he won't whine if he is playing or if he gets distracted,
usually he whines if he has to potty or he will use a puppy pad.
i am planning to keep him in the bathroom from now on, it's less closed up and he can get up and play or use his puppy pads, etc.
and everyone in the house is able to sleep.
i put him in the bathroom earlier,
when i left for an hour or so with some treats , toys, puppy pads, etc.
and he didn't whine and he was playing when i got home.

  • Well, my advice is put him in the create randomly during the day with a treat for only a minute. If he whines, do not let him out till he stops. You could also only give him his favorite treat while in his create. Make his create a fun and secure place. Encourage him in it every so often, when he goes in reward him. Can't say for sure that'll work since I have never really gotten to try it much. xD

My dog will whine in the create if I look at him. If I ignore him and go to bed he'll stop.

If he whines and has to potty let him out. Believe me, that's so much better then him no whining and peeing in the house! My dog will come and whine by me, or sit by the door if he has to potty. It's great! :D
    Please PM if I win.

  • i was planning on leaving his crate open through out the day and keep his blanket in there so that he will sleep in it and get use to it,
he is only 6 weeks old, and he loves to cuddle and be in the bed,
that's the main reason he whines as i found out yesterday. -.-
he was taken away from his mother too early, so he misses his littermates.
which i wouldn't mind him sleeping in the bed, i just don't want him falling off or peeing in the bed.
