well, as most people know, i got my new puppy yesterday.
well, turns out he is only 5 1/2 weeks old,
he does eat solid food and socializes well with other dogs.
but, he is really young and i know breeders who say they don't sell a pup until they are 8 weeks of age or older.
he also has a pot belly, i doubt he has worms because he in hales a lot of air when eating.
i have to help him eat because he is still learning.
i'm hoping no problems occur when he is older because of how young he is.
and i get 0 sleep now,
i can't let him out of my site or he gets lost in the house.
he got lost in the living room. 0_o
any advice/comments? :O

  • Why don't you buy babygates to keep it in a certain area? I did that when I had a puppy and we restricted her to the kitchen while she was being housebroken because we had a floor where any messes could be easily cleaned up. We then let her more space as she got trained.

And if you knew that most puppies shouldn't leave until 8wks..why didn't you ask the owners why they were doing it? You could have also asked them to hold the puppy until the proper age. *shrugs*

  • If you're losing him, you need to puppy proof some rooms, and like tarn said, block him off in there until he is bigger.

As far as the breeder not telling you the age of the puppies o.o I would have been asking their age before taking one home. =/

The vet will let you know if its alright though ^^ Id definitely ask them about the age thing and if theres anything special you should be doing.
All good things must come to an end. All endings will begin new good things.

  • I've never heard of a breeder selling pups before 8 weeks o.O I'm guessing they're actually not a breeder and just didn't desex their dogs >.> He sounds pretty healthy by the way you've described him though ^_^ Like Nickel said, the vet will be able to tell you if they have any concerns :)

Congrats on the new pup :P

  • Some breeders do sell their dogs before 8wks if the new owner is experienced and requests it specifically.

A dog is at an EXTREMELY vulnerable age between 4-8wks. Extremely. This is the imprinting stage, and you have to be VERY careful about what he is exposed too. At this stage, the dog will bond with humans or with dogs, not both. This means if the dog is let loose with other dogs for a long time, it will learn the way of the dog better than the way of the human. And vis versa.

You can let him out to play with the other dogs but you have to make sure that you take him home and bond with him for more time than he has with the other dogs, if you get what i mean. This way, he will bond more with humans and in the end he'll be easier to train and get along with.

You also want to make sure he doesnt get into negative things, and if you're planning on turning him into a working dog, do not correct him from sniffing or chewing. If he chews your furniture, merely take him away and replace the furniture with a dog toy. If you correct him, he will forever view chewing, biting, and/or sniffing as a negative thing and it will be impossible (or near impossible) to train him to bite or track later on.

And if you do take him to the park and stuff, try to make sure he doesnt eat anything off the floor. There's a lot of bugs and worms and stuff that they can get from eating random things. Either that, or they can choke.

Otherwise, he seems healthy and you seem to be doing pretty well with him. Like everyone else, I suggest taking him to the vet and listening to their opinions and/or directions :D

Hope this helps.

he has already attatched me...
like if i leave two steps away from him he freaks and starts whining.
he also has contact with my grandmas dog,
but KC (my grandma's dog) is unsure of him right now and keeps his distance,
they play sometimes.
he doesn't really try eating things,
he likes to bite but i've been reading up on training,
and i growl at him (like his mother would XD) and give him a toy instead.
he deffinatly wont be a working dog, he's a miniature daschund. :P
just for companionship. :)
i already have taught him to sit.
as long as i use his favorite toy,
he's working his way up to where he will sit on comand without the toy.
i also have him on a feeding schedule so that he wont relieve him self every 5 seconds.
