There isn't a consistent light source. And the texture you use for the mane/fur is a start but you used way too much smudge or whatever it is.
Do you use a tablet?
i dont use smudge or anything..and no i dont have a tablet :? i was gonna get one but decided to spend mi money instead of saving $30 more. but, the wolf is just a quick colour thing, i havent shaded or added a light source i just wanted to see if the colours work.

but i usually use the airbrush in gimp for all the colouring and shading unless it's just a flat coat, like you would put on a background.
Well, the texture needs work. As for the light source, I was mainly referring to the horse. But the wolf as well. It's easier to do light sources as you work, imo.
Well, it would help if you looked at your reference(if you have one. Real or not real. xD My references are all in my head.) and looked at the way the horse's mane moved. Make it the colors more.. well, different. You've got a small selection of grays. Try going very dark and very light and then blend with separate strands. Also use a smaller brush.

Not a disability! Just needs practice. c:
I learned by drawing a sun thing roughly where I wanted the light to come from and worked from there. Remember that live animals are not 2D objects. c:
haha. okies. i think that tomarrow morning i will try again on the horse (with different colours, i think i want it to be a palamino..or a lighter brown with yellow/gold hair) and ill post another one. i think i may try the sun thing..sounds smart.
and i dont usually have refs for mi quick sketches. the only ones i usually have refs for are mi commissions. (i still havent finished mondys, it's not coming along to well coz it keeps looking like a blob of fur..-fails-
Again, with staying inside the lines..

You need to color outside of the lines. Not inside. It makes it look choppy.

Don't be afraid to color outside of the lines. Don't listen to what teachers say.. :P

"Color INSIDE the lines"

---
No.

>.>
i know you're supposed to cherish life , but this crap isn't paradise .
