• I think if you want a pet to handle, lizards are not a great choice. They are not 'people' animals, unlike dogs and cats, and prefer to just live by themselves.

If you want something to handle/cuddle with, you should get something that will actually /want/ to be petted.

That's just my opinion.

  • I read some lizards like handling. I've read it's all about domesticating them young, and keeping it up.

  • I get!
It may not always like being handled.
But it would be better for me to get a species known to like or tolerate (depending on who you are) handling.
I'm also looking into the mourning gecko.
Should be going to the store today. I can keep a few mourning geckos....

not in a 10 gallon tank.

  • Yes you can.
I'd put in 2-3, but I read 5-6.

Edit- Quote "Housing In Captivity:
Lepidodactylus lugubris do well in small groups. I keep up to six in a ten-gallon vivarium and this affords the opportunity to witness social interactions amongst the group."

lmao!
you apparently know nothing about lizard care,
the interent is not a relaiable source,
i would suggest books, breeders, or real life people.
a 10 gallon tank would cause stress among the lizards.
they need space, they don't interact much.
in the wild they have large teritories,
they don't all hang out in a tree together,
they aren't dogs.

  • While I know next to nothing about lizards, I just wanted to say: don't believe everything you read. While what you're reading could be true, there's also a possibilty that it isn't.
Why don't you call the vet you're planning on taking your lizard to should it have health issues and ask if they have any website recommendations?
    2mhssbd.png
  • I don't take small pets (i.e. geckos, fish, hermit crabs...) to the vet.

all animals require vet care,
regular check ups, etc.
because most lizards are small,
they might develop problems unseen.

  • Can you just tell me what breed I SHOULD get? Remember: I want to handle it, it must live in a 10 gallon for ever. That's about it. I'd REALLY rather not get a leopard gecko and the tank must remain long, no moving vertically.

you should get no type of lizard.

  • Why? SOMETHING must be able to live in a 10 other than a leopard gecko. And you should be able to handle some geckos that can live in one... Other than leopard...

lmao.
and do you know there average lifespan?
they should live 20+ years.
    Axel.png
  • I am just curious? Why don't you want a leopard gecko? To me they are one of the easiest reps to keep. Yes they can be a little more expensive then other reps but the tank and care for them is pretty cheap.

  • WHY ARE YOU BEING SO MEAN PANDALOVER? You freaked out on another post too. I don't want a leopard, because my brother has 1, so I figure I'd just like something different. Like a viper. BTW, Pandalover, I said it HAS lived in the 10 gallon 6-8 years. It's still living. I may say I've kept my guppy for a few moths, but that doesn't mean it can't live 3 years.

  • you can't hold an anole.
You can, eventually, hold a viper gecko.

  • Lets make sure we keep this nice. All you can do is offer advice. We don't need to get all hounding on someone. They will do what they want after all. I have offered my advice and if it isn't taken its no loss to me. ^^

  • thanks Zoe.
Anyways, do you think a viper or 2 would work?
Hmmm, maybe a texas banded, or a leaf tail?
Leaf tails are hard to gather info on. Are they good to handle?

  • I have no clue. I suggest joining a forum and talking to people that actually have the lizards you are looking into. You just need to research what kind you are wanting.
The things with geckos are most are nocturnal. You rarely ever see them out in the day.
Some info I have gathered on Viper Geckos. Alot are wild-caught. Search for captive bred, as these are less likely to suffer from stress & are free of the often fatal parasites found in wild caught.
All found from researching and scimming around on the net. ^^
The Viper and Texas Baned geckos look almost identical to Leopard Geckos. xD Not really seeing the difference other then price.
Now the Leaf Tail looks like it needs very strict care. Live plants/moss/ very high humidity. Pretty much a mini rain forest.
Just research is all I have to say.

actually you can,
if they are captive bred,
like i have said i have had a few anoles and i was able to handle them.
they are pretty easy keepers.

  • what kind? There are brown, green, and probably more. I read about brown, and got very mixed reviews of handling.

the green anoles i had where pretty mellow.
the brown ones i had where more active and aggresive.

  • don't they require lots of expensive lighting? Besides, I'm looking for something that can either eat fruit sometimes, or only needs feeding weekly. Another reason I like cresties. I might be able to do a DIY flip with some snap buttons to keep on the lid...

  • The only reptile I can think of that eats fruit often is iguanas. My water dragons can eat fruit as well.

However, neither of those can be kept anywhere NEAR a 10gal tank They'd destroy it.

yes they require lighting,
i use zoo med, they work pretty well and last a while,
depending on the number of bulbs you want it can cost between $8-20.
not many lizards eat fruit,
i only fed my anoles 2-3 times a week.
you can get prongs, if you are not into handling bugs.
    Axel.png
  • I don't have a problem with handling bugs, as a matter of fact, I often let pill bugs crawl on me... LOL, they're cute. I have trouble keeping them alive (we tried with my borther's leopard gecko) and I can't buy 3-6 crickets every few days, because I can't go to the pet store that often. Cresties can have crested gecko diet, and then the crickets will come from my brothers lizard.
