New Gecko

edited May 2009 in General Discussion
So, Tippy, my frog, died a few weeks ago. Wellp, I needed another reptile, so, gecko! A Juvenile Leopard Gecko. I need help with the name and how to socialise! He won't come out of the cave exapt to eat and poop and then he's afraid of my hand. Help? Names? Advice? Pics coming soon.

I feed him mealworms, just so you know.

  • 1. I would get him use to your smell
a. Put Your Hands in the cage and touch his objects
b. Make sure you put purified water in his cage (!!!!)
QUESTIONS:

What kind of rock is it?

  • I"m not sure. I got it at petsmart, and it feels like ceramic. Ofcoarse, I'm not too smart on rocks.

  • Usually it's best to leave them in the cage for a week or two, then place your hand in his cage until he gets used to it..

  • All my reps get plain ole tap water. Has never hurt them yet. xD Feed him from your hand. They do bite, but it doesn't hurt at all. I was feeding my geckos some waxworms the other day and they kept biting my fingers as they were grabbing them. They love their yummy treats.
Do you have a under tank heater? just curious xD

  • If the get to used to being left alone they will bit

  • They can bite whenever. xD
My geckos get hardly any handling and the one has never bit and one likes to bite at times. A reptile can never be what you call tame. My water dragon is getting huge. I have seen his teeth. He is handled all the time. He has his moods. He will bite and he is handled alot. ^^

  • I wouldn't force it out of it's cave,
I have handled lizards for years now,
and that might stress it out.

I had to let my lizard get use to it's surroundings before I,
held it, fed it, etc.
It usually only takes a day or two.
My lizard, -that I just got-
was prego,
so that didn't help any. :?

It took the one of mine a week before it would eat,
when I first got it.
It will be fine.

  • It's been two weeks and he was eating fine until I rubbed my smell on stuff.

  • My advice would be to ask Zoe. She's pretty much VP's reptile expert.

It doesn't -sound- like a good idea to me to rub your scent all over his stuff, because to me that'd seem more scary than anything. *shrug*

  • That probably isn't the reason he isn't eating. Most leopard geckos don't eat every day. Most of mine are not very active or friendly either. Like, they loved being handled, but I've never seen one that comes out of it's cave to be handled. Barely any reptiles do that. Just wait a little, and if it still refuses to eat, then, I'd call a local expert.

  • Sometimes mine won't even eat every other day. They have went on a week hunger strike. Reps don't like the same stuff all the time also. They can be picky eaters. I wouldn't advise just feeding mealworms to the gecko either. They can cause impaction because of the amount of chiten. A varied diet is more beneficial with insects varying in nutrition. I feed mine mainly crickets. They also get a couple waxworms as a treat every week. Basicaly you would need to feed about 3 mealworms to get the nutrition of 1 cricket but youd have more chiten from the 3 mealworms then the one cricket. omg I hope I am making sense. xD
Also no sand please! Reptile carpet, paper towels, napkins are all much safer. xD
Impaction Article (Contains some yucky images but if you see it you wont put your geckos on sand or another loose substrate)
<a href="http://hubpages.com/hub/Impaction"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://hubpages.com/hub/Impaction
I can also give you a link to an awesome reptile forum if you would like. ^^

Edit! more to add xD
When I feed my geckos I take everything out of the tank except of course the paper towels I have in now as substrate. Washing the reptile carpet cause even though they are potty trained to one corner it starts to smell a bit after they poo so much. That little toilet paper I put in the corner only gets so much. xD That way I can see and I know they are eating. Also so no little stray crickets can stay in the tank to nibble on my geckos.

  • How big of a tank would you need for two? O.o After awhile...

  • I have a 40 gallon breeder tank that mine are in.
    skizzy.png
  • A minimum of 10 gallons per gecko
    sappeh-1.png
  • Ok. Thanks. So, a 20 gallon would be ok for a male and female breeding pair? I'm talking in awhile. I'm not going to petco today or anything. xD Maybe next breeding season?
