Anybody else a band geek?!!?

edited April 2009 in General Discussion
Like me? If so what do you play and how long have you been playing?
Have you been involved in any clubs?

I play the trumpet. I started in grade 7, made it on the senior band and got to go on the band tour
-- senior band + the grade 7ers that made it was about 100 people. Took 2 tour buses full of kids and instruments
to get us to where we toured to. It sounded INCREDIBLE.
Then grade 8 and 9 I joined Stage Band (jazz band) with my friends afterschool, which was so fun and so so good.

I miss it! Thinking of getting into the community band. :D

 • I'm a band geek, and I'm proud.

I'm in grade nine, started in grade seven playing level one music (which was also played for grade 8 ) in the 7+8 band, now I play level 3+ music in the senior band, becuase there is no grade nine band this year. I plan to stay in band through highschool. Band is a course in grades 9-12, which will really raise my average since I can play really well. I'm the only grade 9 tenor, and I get a solo. XD YAY! (considering the other 4 of the other 5 saxes are grade 12, and the last is grade 11, I say thats pretty sweet!)

I play the Tenor Sax <3. It's my child, I adore it. Even though when I bring it to/from school it makes my arms sore, becuase I have a 15 min walk.

I actually have a concert on Wednesday... we are going to participate in the Kiwanis Music Festival. And we were going to go to Philly for our trip, but due to lack of interest, only 5 people are going with another school to disney. :(

Dang that's cool. I love the saxophone. My sister plays the tenor too!

But what is with them being so heavy? On the tour I always carried the bass sax out of and into the bus. They're like at least 100 pounds.

My friend played the alto and so we put my trumpet mouthpiece on her sax and made a new instrument - the trumpamophone! LOL it sounded ok too.

 • I wish I could have done band when I went to normal school. Right now I play flute. I've been playing just over two years now. c: But apparently I'm ahead for how long I've played. I'm intermediate and know all the notes, I mean. o.O And I a year after I started playing I was working on a song someone who's been playing four years(another student) had finished learning six months earlier.
So I'm a bit proud that my practice is going somewhere. c;

I do do performances and duets though. Like I've done duets with the piano as well as the flute. But I still would love to have been in band.
My mom wants me to learn Sax. But I'd have to teach myself. And I'm looking into purchasing a piccolo.

 • French Horn is hard?

xD Everyone who doesnt play one seems to think so. I started a long time ago though, and it's really easy to me now  I don't get what's so difficult about it, lol.

I think the flute is difficult o.O I cant get a single sound out of them :o

See, it's so heavy because, well... I'm honestly not that tall, I'm slightly below average height. I also carry it with one arm, becuase I can't be bothered with two. And, well... I get my muscle from riding, which build up muscle on the ones you usually do not use for lifting.

By bass sax do you mean baritone? If not, dang, that's cool! I've never seen a bass sax... they are fairly uncommon except in uni/professional concert bands.

 • I think it's because of the mouthpiece and the fact it needs more air to vibrate.
I dunno. I think I tried it when I'd been playing the trumpet for like 1/2 a year.
Everyone thinks the trumpet is hard too lol...

 • Last year I played the alto sax but I lost interest lol. the majority of my classmates play in band though. I didn't like the band teacher. That was half the problem too lol.

 • Well at least you didn't have my grade 12 teacher. I hate to look down upon authority but .... she had some problems. There is this one guy who played the trombone and he was ALWAYS talking, and she would stop and glare at him.... and then sometimes she would yell at the top of her lungs, no joke, "HOWWWWW DAREEEE YOU!!!!!!!"
I got that a couple times too. It was embarrassing but hard not to laugh

 • I lurve my band conductors/teachers. They rock! They are fun teachers, and they love to joke around. And, when we do phenominally at a concert or whatever, we get cake.

And if we have a lunchtime meeting to discuss transportation/pick up music, we get cookies. XD

And people here think bandies are dorks... well, YOU don't get cake from your teacher, do you? Uh huh, ya. Llama-os

But seriously, they are great. We also learn a tonne, they just do it in a fun and interesting way (Like our Band "Quests" (It's a quiz-like test on theory)).

 • Haha yeah I don't really understand the whole "geek" thing. I guess those that aren't musical are jeallllous.
An old lady at my church told me that she used to play the trumpet because
it made her have good kissing lips.

 • I'm a clairinetist. Last saturday, I went to a competion. I got second place, out of, i'd say, 500-some odd kids there. Most of my friends went too. It rocked!
