Aw. :[ && Rabbit Questions?

Lately I've gotten back into the habit of looking at rabbits on petfinder. It used to be a crazy hobby of mine, and there were two bunnies in particular that was extremely fond of. This was months ago now, sometime back in October-November and such. So.. I looked again last night.. And those two bunnies were still looking for a home. They're special needs bunnies. One has a missing eye from a previous abscess, and the other has a major chewing problem.
Of course I was quite upset upon finding them up for adoption still. It's sad that everyone goes for the baby bunnies, especially around Easter, and the older rabbits, the special needs animals get passed by. It's seriously always been my dream to own a special needs animals. Indeed when we were looking for another dog After Auzzy, I was secretly looking at blind dogs, dogs with missing legs, information about special needs dogs, etc. I always dreamed, before I got a dog, that when my parents finally understood that I was mature enough to own a dog, I would walk in the shelter, and head right for the "Disabled Dogs" section(I seriously thought there was one.) and pick out the most perfect, the sweetest, the most beat up dog there was. I never had it much in for owning a puppy. Not even what I was little. I never asked for a puppy. I asked for a dog.

So anyway. I was supposed to bring it up to my parents in January to ask for another dog. But I haven't had the desire or heart to. I've looked at breeds, researched, and the only breed I want would never fit my family's life style. Of course, I could bend.. But with the economy being what it is... I honestly don't think it's fair to my family, my dog-Bella, or myself. So..

Anywho. I'm trying to persuade my dad to help me build Andi, my bunny a nice big cage. Before now he's been outside in a hutch and brought in on cold days and nights. But we really don't have a home for him. And I want to build him a cage custom to him, and I was curious if anyone(besides Bowl/Boz, xD I've already contacted her, waiting for a message), had built a cage for their rabbit or similar and of what products. We were thinking of using chicken wire, but then I found out it was very dangerous to rabbits, so naturally we won't use that. I want something fairly easy to clean, but as cheap as possible. Anyone?

OMG I had a rabbit craze like a couple of months ago too, this one with its eye missing, did they say its left eye and his name was Lil' Crikey? I loved the exact same one, but my mom said no :(
 • Nah, his name is Fergus. And the other is Guinivere. Yeah, I'm not saying I'd adopt them. Sure, I'd love to. But I just like looking at the rabbits and then seeing them disappear the next day from no-kill shelters. Meaning they were adopted. :3 It makes me happy.

 • lol They have another young one on there named Lil' Crikey....I've been watching him grow.... when i first saw him he was a baby, now he's an adult...:\
 • My Dad built my rabbit cage, and I'm currently making a condo-like type top for it. I could probably answer some questions, ect.

First of all, how big is Andi? the bigger the bunny, the bigger the cage must be obviously.

;D So ask away.
 • I had my dad's friend make my rabbit cage. It was for a few flemish giants, so it's huge, but it works really well. He used a very small metal mesh bottom, with wood in the nest box. I scatter hay across the wire, and it keeps they feet nice, and tends to sift most of the poo to the ground (They live outside)

I may be able to help some if you need anything :D

 • Andi currently weighs just under five pounds, but we changed his diet and he's quickly gaining. So I'm hoping he'll be about 5 1/2 pounds at the least when he gets finished. He was a bit underweight. Still is. What type of materials did you use?

 • It's just made of a small wire and plywood, it's really nice. I'll take a picture tomorrow, I am horrible at explaining anything xD

Dido. Mine's about the same. ;D And I'll post some pics when I can get on my desktop compy.

My bunny's 3.5 pounds... a runt :3 So, yesh.

;D
 • Yeah, we think Andi's a Holland Lop, but we're unsure. My parents picked him up at a feed store when they were buying crickets. :/ So obviously he's not from the best of places, butttt he's a keeper. x3

Oh yes, pictures would be lovely. I'll try to get pictures of the space I have to work with as well.

All rabbits are good rabbits. xD Unless they're, like, inbred or something. Petland is also not a very awesome place to get bunnies, but that's where I got my perfect and unbelievably sweet Remi boy. ;D

I'm sure Andi is great, too. (All male bunnies are normally awesome. Females not so much. xD) Lops are cuties! [:
 • So true! I've only had males, but from experience, males do seem to be a bit sweeter. Though it depends on the individual. They're so mischievous! Andi really enjoys chasing the cats. xD

I always have to set up a little block so the cats have somewhere to hide from him. xD Just earlier we couldn't get Lizzie, our skittish gray tabby, out from under the bed because Remi was out hopping around xD She's not a fan of him.
