"B" isn't the end of the world

edited January 2009 in Vent
My mom expects me to get all A's in school. I'm a honor student and I am expected to get all A's. I had a missing assignment in one class that was only worth 10 points, but she makes it seem like I flunked an exam or something.

It's driving me insane! I'm so busy with softball, the musical, science fair, exams, etc. etc. etc. that I'm really trying my best to get my grades up. But according to mom, it's not acceptable to have 3 B's instead of all A's. She always rants about how "I expect all A's from you. I know your better than this, start focusing more!" I know I have to focus to continue with my activities, but I'm sick of hearing about how 'unacceptable it is' to get B's.

I don't know how to convice her that I'm really trying to keep my grades up anymore.

 • My mom is the same way about grades, but I mostly agree with her. Getting into college is getting more and more competitive. You need good grades just to get in, much less scholarships. I am in a lot of activities, but I know that if my grades start to slip, they are all gone instantly. I realize that my priority is school, and in the summer I have the freedom to do what I want.

I don't know if I'm helping you vent much, but I thought I would share my opinion as another high school student. Maybe you could show your mom that you are committed to your grades by quitting an activity for a little while so you can focus on school.

-Rosy
 • That's crazy, if someone was treating me like that I'd go on a "strike" of sorts and get all F's next time xD.
 • i'm so in love with my sports, but i could stop conditioning for a while... and i can't quit the musical (mom deicated me to that) i obviously cant quit science fair (im required to do that) and I can't skip exams (though i wish i could). :x dis makes meh angry!

 • You know what? Not to sound mean or anything, but I think your mom is doing the right thing.

My best friend, she's been getting B's in English and Math, and her parents GROUND her if she doesn't get all As. As in, she can't go anywhere, can't use the phone or the computer, etc.

I agree with them, colleges are getting more and more competitive. I study and work hard to get all As, so I can take honor and AP classes when I get to high school next year. Because I don't know about you, but my family isn't rich. They can't afford to send me to college for eight years so I can become a vet. I have to work hard, pay for most of it on my own, and definitely need to get a scholarship.

If other activities are keeping you so busy that you can't do your homework, you need to quit some of them. Because school should be your top priority. So I'd stop complaining and count your blessings that your mom ACTUALLY cares, because I can name plenty of people whose parents DON'T.

 • -sigh- Okay so, B's truly aren't that big a deal if it's one or two. Making -straight- B's and lower, would be bad, but if you're making straight A's and have one B, it's not going to make much of a difference to colleges. If the B is in a class like science, and you don't plan on going into a science field of work in college, they won't even acknowledge it.

The grades you get in 1 semester are all averaged together for a semester grade and then the grades you get for both semesters in a year are all averaged together for a final year grade, which is what colleges look at, the semester and year grades, not the individual grades.

Also, one B isn't gonna affect getting AP classes, as long as you pass all of your -required- classes freshman/sophomore year, you can get as many AP classes as you want to fill in the classes you don't have anything for.

And yeah, colleges are getting competitive, but not impossible. There are plenty of financial aid, loan and scholarship opportunities available, which is what I'll be using to get into college. And the good thing about financial aid is that you don't have to pay it back, but you have to qualify for it with strict criteria. If you're good at sports and you like whatever sport you play, keep at it, you might get a scholarship for that sport. I know most sports scholarships give a -full- ride to college.

College is a big deal, good grades are a big deal, but -one- B isn't a big deal. :P

• My mind is honors. My work is regular. Long story short: If I tried to make good grades, I'd be in high school already. I'm in honors Spanish. I can be in all honors next year if I work hard the remaining quarters like a bat outta hell.

In truth, I don't care. I'll probably not go straight from high school into college. I'd like to travel to all fifty states and DC AND see the ball drop in Time Square.
I care about my grades, what I want to be, and the future. I care about my family. I'm not to worried about college.

Not to butt in or anything, but if you don't have a college education and a job, how are you going to afford all of those things? Gas is going up as we speak, plane tickets are uber expensive already, not to mention food expenses and such. Where are you going to sleep? Hotels are expensive. So are cars, gas, houses... how are you going to afford that stuff AND travel to all fifty states and DC and TS if you don't have a college education and a good, well-paying job?

Work age in NC is 14, therefore I can get a job when I turn 14 this summer.
I've looked into this. I've planned 6 years into my future. I know what I'm going to do, and who I'm going with.
I know my life. I like my life.
Plus, I have three places I can stay. I've got this planned out.
This may not be the first time I've said this to everyone, but I will say this again.
I know what I'm doing, don't worry about me, I'll be fine.

 • I sort of have my life planned, but I'm still panicking about it... I have no idea what I'm doing.

Lucky you.

-Rosy
 • If you want to travel at a young age, you'd better get a college education and a good job first. You think working as a waitress or a scanner at Wal-Mart or whatever is going to take you to all 50 states and DC? I think not. Maybe you'd better rethink your future.

[/hijack]
Okay.
I will explain this once more, before we go back to the original topic of the thread. If you would like to continue this, take it to PM -_-
What I want to be. Something in the medical career. Probably a nurse anesthetist. Maybe a physician. Someone in the hospital.
That is twelve years in med school.
I get out of high school when I'm 17. Add twelve to that. I'm going to be going on 30 when I graduate.
That is why I don't want to go straight into college.
More than vet school, no?

Well. If you saw things how I see it, better yet ever talked to me, you'd see how I have it thought out ;)
I'm smarter than your average kid, trust me.

 • Ok, I'm not really complaining, I'm just letting out anger. I want to go into engineering and pretty much know what I want to do with my life. I get grounded for grades, I don't get paid for grades, which also means I'm not allowed to ask for money, I get $2 a week, that's it, so I know how to manage money as well. I'm NOT complaining here, so please don't take it like that. I just wanted to get it off my back and relieve some pressure from my life.

 • Everyone has different perspectives on this sort of thing because it all depends on the quality of life you have. Everyone has their own idea of a good grade, and everyone has their own priorities.

I don't think it's fair to be criticizing people in a vent thread...
 • I totally agree with you, so please don't go ranting on here about me, I ust wanted to get it off my chest. thankies Bode! :D
