Critique my Drawing (I know it's horrible)

edited December 2008 in Artist Alley
Here are some guidlines to drawing running dogs. I got bored and decided to try it so I can remember how to draw them, so I decided to share them with you!

1. Shapes and lines are very important, here's the first sketch, it shows the lines that show how the body of the dog is straight in certain areas.
-the back and upper body are mostly straight

<img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/sketch1.jpg"; alt="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/sketch1.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

2. The head of the dog is angled. Notice the upper body and chest are straight. (The ovals show the general shape and muscular areas of the dog)

<img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/sketch2cropped.jpg"; alt="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/sketch2cropped.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

3. The front legs of the dog are streched outward and seem to be bearly touching the ground.

<img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/sketch3cropped.jpg"; alt="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/sketch3cropped.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

4. Add fur and more details to the drawing (I know my drawing of the whole detail process isn't the best)

<img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/sketch4cropped.jpg"; alt="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/sketch4cropped.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

5. You can add a ground or more details. (I just did it quick, nothing fancy)

<img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/sketch5cropped.jpg"; alt="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc69/Quiggles_101/sketch5cropped.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTION OR COMMENTS PLEASE LEAVE THEM HERE! I AM OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS! (I know im not the best drawer, please don't be mean about it!)

 • I'm not a fan of using shapes, I would suggest instead to look closely at a photograph to see how the proportions and anatomy come together. Using a refference will hugely improve your art.

I do,however, I realize a lot of people do like to use shapes. If that's what works for you, go for it. It can be helpful, in combination with using a REF PICTURE. I really can't stress the ref picture thing enough.

If you do use shapes, check out a how to draw book, it shows how to use them properly. Right now, I think they are hindering you more than anything. There is usually a circle for the shoulder, for the stomach and for the hips. The placement of the circles here, well, really doesn't make an anatomical sense to me. XD

Anyway, hope that's some help. :)

 • Your anatomys off, for the msot part in the hind legs.
And a few other parts are out of proportion(head, torso, ect.)
But its a good little turorial for cartoon/chibi type animals. XD
