<span style="font-size:75">Ok I might sound stupid for this buuut...<br>I NEED HELP ON THESE STUPID VERBS!<br><br>Stupid helping and linking verbs. I do not get. And infinities but I get those xD<br><br>This is the sentence:</span><br> <br><span style="font-size:150">"How many hours did it take to put on your clown makeup?"</span><br><br><span style="font-size:75">I need to label the helping/main verbs, linking verbs, and action verbs [if any]<br><br>Anyone know what they are? XD<br><br>Much appreciated if you help :]</span>

  • I think 'Put' is the action verb and 'did' is the helping verb. I've never done linking verbs before, but are they the ones that aren't really actions and just join to parts of the sentence? 'Take' is probably the linking verb, because it's the only other word that looks like a verb to me xD

  • I am not a hundred percent sure, but I would have to agree with Mossy. My english teach told me that it is easier to spot those kinds of things when it isn't a question and its a statement. Maybe changing it to 'It did take many hours to put on your clown makeup' or something along those lines.<br>And even with the sentence like that, it doesn't help me. The subject is at the end instead of at the beggining and I can't do much with that.<br><br><br>I don't know. If that helps, glad I could help.<br>If not, just ignore me. ;)

  • <span style="font-size:75"><span style="text-decoration:underline">did take</span> is a verb phrases, whereas 'did' is the <br>helping verb and 'take' is the action verb. <br><span style="text-decoration:underline">to put on your clown makeup</span> is a prepositional phrase I believe.</span>
