Working at the shelter = ... ugh

edited November 2008 in General Discussion
No, this isn't about the work ;-P
I've worked at the SPCA for a while and I've never really fallen in love with any of the animals. However, today there's this cat that I named. He's different from the rest in his own way, he growls at everything so prolly won't get adopted very easily.

This is weird, but he doesn't seem to growl or claw at me at all. In fact, he comes when I call him, he rubs against me, lets me play with him and he's even purred when I stroked him. He doesn't do any of this with ANYONE else. I just met him today.

So should I back away and try not to get any more attached than I already am? I already have two cats and four dogs. Parents don't want any more pets but

So, what should I do? Really need advice :?

  • Hey. If it's meant to be, he'll be yours.
If it's not, someone else'll adopt him.
The future isn't easily told xD
So, I'd just wait and see.

And it depends if you're already too attatched to the cat...?
  • Heh, I dunno *shrug* Sure, I love him but I don't see any way how my parents will ever agree to another pet. That kind of brings my hope down by, *counts* allot
  • I was doing good with not falling in love with any animals at the shelter too. But this one day I walked in and omg, there in her cage was the most adorable little bunny I've ever seen and I just melted. I wanted her SO bad but I didn't think my mom would want me to get another bunny.
I ended up adopting her and she is the most adorable little thing ever. x3
    Please PM if I win.

  • Maybe you can talk your parents into one more pet :D
  • Oh it's hard NOT to become attached to some animals. I worked in a Animal Sanctuary for 7 years, and fell in love with many. Most, I accepted that I wasn't supposed to be the one taking them home, others (such as 2 of my dogs, my 2 cats and 2 of my ferrets) I just couldn't deny that I was their owner.

However, just before I left, I bonded to a beutiful little husky pup. She was so scared and nervous, but whenever she saw me, she would act like a dog. I begged and begged my parents to let me have her, but, as I can now understand, I was told that 4 dogs was enough.

It absolutley KILLED me to rehome her to someone else. And because I was the only one she acted like a dog with, I was the one who had to show her to potential owners. In my eyes none were good enough for her, but I had to let her go.

I know it's hard, but you have to try and harden yourself and keep your distance emotionally from these animals. It does come with practice. I never mastered it though :(

Thanks, mashivak! That was encouraging :)
  • maybe, even if you can take it,you can work with the cat and other workers their,so that it gets use to being around others and will have better luck finding home,i know it will be hard for you but in long view will help cat,try playing with cat, then introduce another person in play.i remind myself daily,we are here for what is best for the animals.not what is best for us,but it is real hard

  • talk to your parents and explain the reasons... if they dont agree... try and get one of your friends to adopt her... you can see her whenever and help her settle in :)
