Puppies...

edited November 2008 in General Discussion
So I am going to be moving out soon and I can't take my big dogs with me since I will be moving into an apartment so i am looking for a small dog with not a whole bunch of energy and very friendly.

Does anyone have any recommendations for me?

I don't know a thing about small dogs since I've always grown up with big ones, so any info on the breeds would be good. :)

  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are supposed to be very loyal, friendly dogs. I've never owned one... but I will someday  I've seen them before and they dont appear to be energetic.

I've lived with big dogs my whole life too.

maybe doxies?
Not the minis, but the Large Doxies. I used to have a Large Doxie, he was pretty good and didn't have a TON of energy at all. Yes, they get into their play moods, but they go to sleep and take a nap right after xD
Also, my grandmother has a mini doxie, he isn't that hyper and he plays, but then he loves to snuggle up to anyone.

uhm Scotties? But they need to be played with :P and have alot of energy

  • I could recommend Shih-tzus. :3
They're sweet, but not so smart, I've heard. XD

They also like to play by themselves o_o

I used to own a Shih-tzu/Maltese mix, now my aunt has her, but she's very sweet and loves to romp around with you. :3
    bluehh.
  • I would also say pugs. they are silly.

i'de also say Shih-tzus, however I thought they weren't over 10lbs, because my aunt owns one, and he barely feels like he is over 7lbs xP
But they are funny dogs also, but they snore alot XD haha.

  • Thanks guys, I'm reading alot about these dogs now :D

We were maybe thinking of a terrier, like a scottich or a west highland or something around that size.

The Doxies are a good idea too though, my dad has 2 mini's and they are very good snugglers.

I've never been around pugs, so I think I would have to atleast see one in RL.

I do like Shih-tzus but my boyfriend doesn't think much of them, so I think that takes them off my list.

But thank you so much guys!

*hugs all*

  • Heh, Terriers tend to be high energy  My Uncle has a Westie, she's sweet :)

Also, why not try the pound and find a smaller dog there?

  • i would say recommend a cockapoo. mi best friend has one, they dont need much exersize but they do occasionally tend to get in hyper moods if you let them. if they are firmly (not cruely) disciplined they will end up to be extremly loyal and obedient. they are also protective if their 'family' or 'friends' are threatened.

Yeah thats what I was afraid of, but at our local shelter they have a silky, a westie and a scottie, that's the only reason we were looking at those.

I really want to get a dog from the pound tho, so that's probably where I'll get it, but I'm just trying to get ideas

  • You could also try looking for on the internet for certain breed type rescues in your area. Thats if you are wanting a certain breed/can't find the right one at the shelter. ;D
Its still rescuing. lol
    skizzy.png
  • you can also go to charity dog shows, they often has sections for dog recue homes, and alot of the time they bring dogs that need recues so that you can meet them :D

DON'T GET A CHIHUAHUA

They're cute and all that jazz

But my friend Sydney had two

One was a total brat, extremely mean and bullied her Shih Tzu -- wouldn't let him eat, go outside, etc. And the other one was extremely submissive, if you so much as touched her she'd pee herself

And yeah. I'd say go to the shelter and get a good old fashioned mutt :3

  • agrees w/loko as well. i've never adopted a dog from petfiinder but i used to browse it all the time, you can def. find any breed you want, just depends on if the specific shelter is willing to adopt out to someone not in their county.

i would also agree w/zoe and go w/something like a pug or french bulldog. esp. since you've grown up w/big dogs, these breeds are def. big dogs in small packages. and they're easier as far as upkeep compared to little hairy dogs. i think english bulldogs need someone that is familiar w/the breed, they can have several health problems, and are not so good to have if you're not living on the first floor. not to mention they are pretty expensive b/c they have small litters.
my friend has a mini doxie, and her nickname is sheriff b/c she's on patrol 24/7. old lady walking down the street? let's try to chase her at 30mph while barking the whole time. lol that dog runs everything, everywhere. in control at all times.
It's just life. You'll get over it.
  • Wow nutty write me a novel! lol

But thank you guys, petfinder is actually what i've been using to look up dogs, because I look at what's close and then google the breed and read up on it.
