Dog Watch

edited September 2008 in General Discussion
Well my eight year old Golden Retriever (Rosie) had to get surgery today [September 17, 2008]. We took her this morning at 8:00 and she has been at the vet all day. We have no idea if she is staying over the night at the vet's yet, but most likely we are picking her up around 5:30 pm. My dog had to go to the vet because she has a ruptured ACL in her knee, which is basically a torn ligament. If we didn't get this surgery my dog would be permanantly crippled in that leg, and she would later get horid arthritis. Meh when she gets home she has to wear an E-Cone, and she HATES those >.< What is a ruptured ACL? When the anterior cruciate ligament ruptures (is torn), the joint becomes unstable and the femur and tibia can move back and forth across each other. The anterior cruciate ligament is most commonly torn when the dog twists on his hind leg. The twisting motion puts too much tension on the ligament and it tears. This often occurs if the dog slips on a slippery surface, makes a sudden turn while running, or is hit by a car. Obesity puts too much weight on the knee and overweight dogs tend to have more occurrences of ruptured cruciate ligaments. The underlined words are what happened in Rosie's case, and to fix it they go in and make a new ligament with fish wire.

I will post pictures in order from old to new. I don't have any pictures of her when she was limping, and I kill myself for not getting these photos, but you will just have to do with the ones after surgery. I guess I will post the last photo of her before she got surgery, but it won't be any of her limping. I won't be able to get every photo, so I don't annoy my dog to death >.<, but if you have any requests or questions I will try and answer them!

U P D A T E S
September 17, 2008- 8:00 am: We take Rosie to Brightwood Animal Hospital for her big surgery!
September 17, 2008- 6:10 pm: Rosie arrives home from a long day with battle wounds to show everyone.
September 17, 2008- 7:40 pm: We take Rosie to go outside for the first time. To do this we have to help her walk by holding her up with a towel around her stomach. This took about 15 minutes to do, leading in a succesful pee xD
September 18, 2008- 2:55 pm: Last night was so bad for Rosie. All she wanted to do was go to sleep but I believe she thought if she went asleep the surgery would happen again and she would be in pain because every time she dosed off her head shot in the air and she started crying for me or my mom. In order for her to fall asleep you had to lay next to her, but eventually we had to go to bed, and in our own beds. The whole night she was crying, but we couldn't do anything to help except give her her pills.
September 19, 2008- 6:15 pm: We noticed that Rosie was chewing at her wounds from all the scratches that had formed on her leg. We tried putting on the E-Cone, but no hope at all. She tried everything possible to get that thing off of her. In the end we had to put a knee sock on her leg, when we got home there were no more scratches ^_^

P H O T O S
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/rosie3.png"; alt="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/rosie3.png"; class="bb-image" />
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/rosie5.png"; alt="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/rosie5.png"; class="bb-image" />
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/rosie2.png"; alt="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/rosie2.png"; class="bb-image" />
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/rosie4.png"; alt="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/rosie4.png"; class="bb-image" />

<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/scar6.png"; alt="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/scar6.png"; class="bb-image" />
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/scar5.png"; alt="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/scar5.png"; class="bb-image" />
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/scar4.png"; alt="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/scar4.png"; class="bb-image" />
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/scar3.png"; alt="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/scar3.png"; class="bb-image" />
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/scar2.png"; alt="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/scar2.png"; class="bb-image" />
<img src="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/scar1.png"; alt="http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/tikie06/scar1.png"; class="bb-image" />

  • They look like very painful wounds.

It's so sad when dogs cry, isn't it? It makes you want to crawl up in a ball with them and just stay there until they feel better, hey?
It's really terrible that she thinks the surgery will start again if she sleeps :(
That could be a tragic thing to a dog as much as it is for people... :?

She's a beautiful girl golden.... • I had that happen to my 6 Year Old Rotty, Ruby.. Except in both back legs! She has had allsorts of things wrong with her, but her tempermant has to be the best in any dog I have ever seen. Obviousley she was bred for the show ring, breeder not considering her health. Poor dog, and even now, she is having ear infections constantly.

I love her to bits, and I dunno what I'd do without her.

Good luck to your doggeh, and give her hugs from me, because I have been through it twice. Hope she recovers quick =)

  • Thank you ^_^ and I forgot to post this in the updates but she is actually putting presure on her leg and I am so proud of her, because the vet said it would take at least a month to start putting pressure where it hurts!

  • GORGEOUS dog!!
My pup Tasha (Great Dane/Lab mix) had gotten some scratches on her foot about a month ago, so she limped on it. We didnt see the lacerations on her foot until I had kept it wrapped for about 2 days (thinking she had a sprang from going up and down the attic stairs) and when I took the ace bandage off, the entire foot was swollen. I had shaved all the fur off her foot, and washed it with antibiotic soap and kept antibiotic ointment on it, as-well as gauze bandaging (repeated this every 6 hrs. until it was fully healed). But she didnt allow us to put the cones on her either. As-long as it had a thin layer of gauze on it though, she wouldnt touch it. She didnt keep weight on it though until it had completely healed up, and some of the fur had grown back. Not sure why... I know how stressful things like what your dog is going through can be. But with a little help, it'll all get better. Hope she improves great. Looks great too. :D
    If you've ordered anything, please be patient with me. Having volcano/ash troubles. Msg me for more info, and I'll get back to you asap!! Thankies!!
