Why does my dog do this..?

edited August 2008 in General Discussion
Okay, well I have a four year old female German Shepherd named Sheba. She loves to play with stuffed animals, and when she is playing alone, she likes to do the 'death grip' on her toys. She tightens her jaws around them and won't let go. She puts her two front paws on them and clings to it with her nails. She will do it for hours on end. When we say her name, she will look but not release. But when I grab it and say let go, she will.

I'm not sure if it means something..like releasing stress or something. But i'm just dying to know why she does it.
Does anyone else's dog do this..

 • My dog sorta does this. But whats weird is he like sucks on his stuffed bear. If my dig cam was working I would show you pics of his bear. xD Its so funny looking. The bear looks like a cone head.

 • It could possibly just be a way to occupy herself when she's bored. My dog only does that if she's got noth else to do while she's outside.

She'll grab a stuffy, fling it in the air, catch it, lie down with it, and do the same.

Unless I come out. Then she stops, looks at me, and dawdles around like she wasn't trying to murder any one of the toys I've given her. lmao xD
 • My Irish Setter recently turned 6 and he still does that with his toys - except he'll "nurse" on it. If you watch his paws he'll be pushing on his toy stimulating what he'd do when he was just a pup trying to get milk from his mother. :3

It's super cute.
