Anyone show dogs? RL

I've been thinking about starting up showing dogs (hobby for me and my companion :D) Does anyone show dogs? How did you get started? Are there any classes or books you would suggest?

 • I show dogs I only have shown one year though and did training through 4-H and thats pretty much how I got started. I don't show a pure breed dog none of mine are I show a beagle mix right now and next season I am showing my cockalier( Calvalier x Cocker Spaniel). There are lots of good books out there I am not sure what they are called you can sign up for classes at different places. I can help you find a place if you want just PM me.

I know quite a few other people on here show dogs.

Yeah, handling was basically is basically a family thing. Most of my aunts
and a lot of my "extended" family are dog handlers.

I could sit and talk for hours about handling :D So if you need anything further just let me know! ^_^ And I'll help as best I can. It's always good to
get others into handling ;D

Anyways,

First off, what breed is your dog? And also, does it have papers, specifically with AKC? All of our dogs are AKC and I'm unfamiliar with any others :) So, yeah...if it's not AKC I'm afraid I can't help you there ;D

Let me just start by saying that showing dogs isn't cheap. For a two day, two class entry it usually cost around $80.
We have 13 dogs, and usually enter around 7-8 of them.
My mom finds it easier to have a separate account in the bank, specifically for entry money :)

Now, getting started is particularly easy actually...
dogtrainer101 said that she learned through 4-H classes. Although I've not done that, nor did I know you could do that =o
I would suggest taking classes through the AKC.
You can do that by clicking the following link
<a href="http://www.akc.org/events/obedience/training_clubs/"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.akc.org/events/obedience/training_clubs/
and selecting your state.
It will bring up a list of training clubs, and what they offer there. :)
I would much rather send someone to a training club since I know they would be being taught by professionals who can answer any/all questions you might have and who are experienced.

For conformation, especially, I know from experience that watching other people do it helps you learn much more efficiently than if you take classes. However, you would need to take classes to learn techniques and what not.
Basically what I'm saying, is before you start taking classes, you should
always go to local shows to get used to the environment, watch your own breed ring and what not. It's also a good way to start talking with other handlers.

Hope this helps, and makes sense xD Let me know if you have any questions or anything :D

Oh and to find local shows in your area :D
<a href="http://www.akc.org/events/search/index.cfm?action=refresh_index&active_tab_row=2&active_tab_col=2&fixed_tab=7"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">click this
leave the club name blank
if you have a specific breed you'd like to see, select it in the drop down box, although most shows are all-breed.
1 particular breed is called a specialty show
then pick your time range
junior showmanship is competitors from the ages of 9-18 in their own ring
its fun to watch and if you're in that age range, you might also be interested in that

:)
