riding

edited August 2008 in General Discussion
Okay I have noticed recently that costs for riding lessons have gone up drastically in such a short span of time. I remember the good old days (like 6 years ago xD) when riding used to cost like $20 a lesson.

Well eventually it went up to 35. I have moved now, and would really love to go to this lovely barn with lovely horses and lovely people and lovely stalls and arenas. -_- It would be much better for my advancement in riding, and it is honestly beautiful. Even 'manure-haters' could not avoid such a fact.

Well I shall let you all ponder for a moment why I will probably not be going to this barn. It is $50 -per lesson-.

So I get stuck in another barn -which is also very nice, and such- but less expensive (35).

Yes, I have noticed that what I have stated above all makes very clear sense, considering without $50 a lessons from its riders, the nice barn with amazing instructors could never be so nice.

But sheesh, has anyone noticed such a drastic change in prices?

The prices I stated above are all for group lessons, often times exceeding 4 participants. Sometimes less.

This isn't so much a vent, because I understand all the reasons, they make perfect sense to me, it is more just a... discussion type of thing xD

  • I understand what you mean there. I have been looking into many barns that offer lessons, but all are too expensive for long-term lessons, and if they aaren't, all the people are rude, and unprofessional.

I usually try to offer to clean stalls and groom horses to pay for my lesson's, but very few accept that anymore. I used to do that with my mom for trail rides when I was 10. Now, they usually just say they won't accept labor as payment. -.-

  • *nodnod*
I have noticed that too. The ones that are affordable can often contain un-professional people, and the ones that are so expensive have all the uber professional people who call back within the hour.

I had a pretty perfect one before I left.

I won't lie Sappers, I never have laboured for my lessons xD
Though I would love to do such a thing, despite the oddness of that statement.

Most barns don't accept that nowadays. -_-

I do consider myself very fortunate to have to opportunity to ride, and I am thankful for it.

  • My Riding Stable charges $34.45 per lesson[One hour]. But it's not some fancy stable either xD It's decent, though ^^

Every day I came early, and helped the workers catch, groom, and tack the horses, then take them out after lessons, so now I've been offered a job there, and now I'll be getting lessons free. xD

But yeah, when I first started looking at riding stables, I found this one that was like, perfect. xD But it was uber expensive.
I am glad that I went with this stable, I've learned so much from my instructor <3

Thanks for the lovely banner, Nickel :)
  • I used to ride... lemme think... about 4 years ago, and lessons were about $25. Even then, I had to stop because my parents thought it was too expensive and wouldn't pay for it. I wouldn't mind, but they were spending around $60 a week on my brother's various activities, so I still hold a bit of a grudge. I was too young to get a job at the time and I planed to work part time there mucking out stalls when I was old enough so I could still ride. I'm old enough now, but it's on the other side of town and I just don't have enough time.

I think my old stable still take labour as payment too, so if you call around to any in your area you're bound to find one that might take you :3

  • well I don't take lessons but I do have my own horse I remember when my cousin used to pay $400 for all 4 of her horses but now its about $1,500 a month for what she has for me it is only $225 but still it is a lot.

One of the main reasons that lessons are so much is the price of hay and feed has gone up. The lady that owns the boarding place where i am at spends $2,000 on good quality hay and that feeds 11 horses and 4 minis.
  • hmm.
Yes of course, everything is going up in price now. With the gas prices through the roof, and just in general.

My old barn, the one that I went to when I lived in my old house, was 30 mins. away, and therefore even if I wanted a job, my mother would never be volunteering to drive me there.

Hopefully because my new one is closer I will be able to help out around and maybe get a job there later on.

  • yeah where my horse is boarded is about 10 mins from my house so I can ride my bike there(while its nice out that is) and work off some of my board.
  • xD I'm paying 1500$ a month for my two horses... plus the lease on one -_-;;

riding lessons have gone through the roof- I'd suggest that if you reallllllly want to ride, lease a horse, and find a cheap-ish place to board it... you dont have to pay 40$ an hour xD

I wish I could work off my board. Im not allowed to drive yet (even though I have my license, my mum hoards it) and the stable is almost an hour out. Stupid city doesn't allow any livestock except for a week in July.

  • *nodnod*
1500???
Sheesh.

Yes, I will be leasing a horse soon enough, because of so many costs and all. It is pretty much cheaper to lease xD
