Suggestions for a dog's passing?

edited August 2008 in General Discussion
My aunt's shetland sheepdog, Manny, is gonna have to be put down pretty soon. He was a sweetie, but he's 14 and they just found out he has a whole bunch of cancerous tumors all over his belly. It's inoperable because the tumors are so close to his heart.

He falls down whenever anyone touches him, and he can't hear them call him anymore. 1-4 weeks, depending on how much he's suffering.

I love Manny, but he's an old geezer and he had a good life. I'm worried about their other dog, though, she's majorly attached to him. They're not sure what to do to comfort their other dog when the time comes. Any suggestions?

  • There's really nothing you can do, just hope the other dog takes it peacefully. In the end Manny is going to have to leave whether the other one can take it or not. Sorry Manny is going to die.

  • Thats the exact thing that happened to Tiffany =/

My dogs were majorly attached to her as well. Abby was really close to her, as she had known her her whole life, and she moped around for a while =/ The whole family was pretty much sad for a while after... but it will eventually pass.

There's not much you can do though, they will eventually learn he's not coming back. :(

Im sorry for the loss, and I hope everything will work out alright.

  • My advice is to let the other dog grieve and he will but he will also move on in a timely fashion. He won't need much extra comfort aside from you allowing him to deal with the loss.

I am sorry for your loss.

A REAL APBT should weigh 13kg to 27 kg, so why do all the APBTs on VP average 48kg?!?
  • I strongly suggest (if at all possible) to show the exsisting dog the body of the one put to sleep. This will help the surviving dog come to terms with it as it realises that it's companion is no longer alive.

My cat was put to sleep a few years back and was buried in our garden. My bitch who mothers everything watched us bury her with a panicked look on her face. Because the family was grieving we didn't think to show her tha cats body. Even to this day my dog sits near where we buried the cat and looks down almost saying "She's in there get her out"

  • I don't know what to do as for the other dog but heres a suggestion to comfort the owner.(my grandma did this for my cousin when his dog died.) Give them money to donate to a local shelter in the dogs name. You would be amazed how happy it makes them. (if you don't have money you could raise some. it's not the amount that really matters its the deed)

  • :( thats like.. really depressing. well, you can spend as much time with him,and give him alot of attention. ive had to go threw 2 dogs being put down, so i know how you feel. But *sigh* you wont be as sad after a few onths(or a month or two) go by. things will get better.
