• Hmm. I post warnings, and I vented, and I banned and locked and edited and warned again. But you all INSIST on posting personal information.

Why is this I wonder? Do you really believe there are no perverts on th internet? Do you really believe that posting your information is safe? Also, I am sure your parents taught all of you not to talk to strangers, not to get into cars with people you don't know, and how to keep yourselves safe when you are somewhere without a parent.

So why do you all think it is perfectly fine to tell details about yourselves? I am tired of trying to protect each of you from danger, when you don't even listen to anything I say.

No where on the internet is safe from predators, not even VP.

Those of you who have posted, now I have a lot of information about you and your families. And if I have it, that means hundreds of people could have it.

Don't you all realize that this information could be collected and saved?

Good point. I removed my information.

  • Actually, I don't see a point in getting upset with this. Yes the general post is annoying, but How many uncle Bob's are there in construction work? They are just first names, it's not like they gave out:

John Smith who lives in Hoogabooga Michigan and works at Hoogabooga grocery store.

I seems like this has been taken way overboard and it seems like feeling important and powerful is the main concern.

  • <a href="http://www.netsmartz.org/stories/teresa.htm"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://www.netsmartz.org/stories/teresa.htm

It is not about power. I really wish that I didn't have to worry about this topic. But it is so easy to gather information.

Anyone can be whoever they want online. And it is easy to believe people are what they say.

But honestly, you don't know if the person you are chatting with is a 13 yr old girl, a 45 yr old man, a grandma, a teacher, or a predator that molests kids.

Sure, it is true, giving your first name is harmless. Giving your age is harmless. Yup, that is a fact.

But it never stops there.

Someone who is looking for a kid to target can easily pretend to be a kid themselves.

And make friends with one of you.

And find out what you like to do for fun, where you like to do it and so on.

So this person typing to you can say they are a 14 yr old girl. And get you talking about the latest teen sensation, Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers, or something similar.

And from there it is easy to get more information.

Something as simple as, "oh Jonas Bro's were here last night in concert but I couldn't go", or "I can't wait til they get here next week". Little comments like that can tell your location.

So they go and look at their webpage, and see what city they performed in last night.

Now this person would know your first name, age and city. With a post like this one about families, they also know parents names, occupations, siblings, cousins, ages, grades etc.

Then all they have to do is spend some time chatting with you, making 'friends' with you, and you might say something about a school game, or how your team beat another, or that you love going to a specific mall.

All these little clues can be saved, added up, put together and used to track you down.

True the risk isn't 100%. But I would feel horrible if I found out that I ignored someone giving out info and they got attacked, kidnapped, murdered or anything bad because I didn't say something.

So you can tell me all day it is all about power and telling others what to do. But the whole reason I became an op was because I care about kids. I wouldn't let a kid play with a knife, and I would stop a kid from running across a busy street, and I will do my damnedest to stop kids from doing ANYTHING that could hurt them badly.

And that includes giving out personal information. Call it a power trip if you want, I don't care. I would rather piss off everyone with my "so-called" power trip, than know that someone got hurt because I stayed quiet.

  • Yet everyone knows about Ducky and everyone knows (and is reminded every day) about your delicate condition. Maybe if you do what you say, you might get a little bit more respect from players who don't fall all over op feet because they are ops. Also, I hear you want to take real $$ for training? How do you expect to do that without getting information from the players you're taking money from? Paypal accounts, names etc. And if its through the mail? You have to be kidding me.
    YzmaandKronk.gif
  • I'm with Lady Ru on this.. It isn't necessarlily the information you give on this post that will lead a predator to you, but it does open the door for conversation. "You lost a brother to leukemia, my aunt Sarah died from it when I was 10. Man, that was scary, she lived with us. yada yada. Do your remember when your brother died?" Most likely, in the flow of conversation, you will give your age. "Don't you hate little sisters? My sister is always coming in my room messing with my stuff and trying to wear my clothes so she can show off to her little 6th grade friends. Grr, makes me mad. She even stole my Jonas Brothers CD. Do you like Jonas Brothers? I got to see them in concert last year, did you?" etc. etc.

I've modded for other games and it always amazes me that people will talk to anyone and give out all kinds of information. I have discovered at least three predators online on different games and they act like I just did. They try to find things in common with you, which is made so much easier when you give them stuff to relate to. They pretend to be about your age, maybe a little older, to like the stuff you do, and try to seem like a friend. They vent and get angry for you when things aren't going your way, they consol you when you're sad and are overjoyed when you tell them about something good that happens to you. They make up things to make you feel bad for them, and to feel glad for them. They are willing to wait weeks to get enough infomation about you. And then it gets scary. For some predators, the games played before the actual deed are as much fun as the final act.

Pedaphiles haunt places like VP and sites that aren't supposed to be mentioned, including other games that don't have the rules VP does, exactly because they know kids are here and they know how to talk to them. There is no place on the internet that is 100% safe, though we try here to keep kids safe.

And don't get me wrong, it's not just kids that are in danger. Adults are too. And for those who think it won't happen to me, or say I lie about personal stuff, there was a story on the local news where Zoe lives about girl who claimed to be 24, (probably thinking it would keep the pedaphiles away) who met a guy online and then disappeared. I'm sure she didn't think it would happen to her either.

So next time you think about posting personal info, whether in the forums, chat or even in private messages, think twice and three times. That person just might not be who they say they are and I'd so much rather you be safe than sorry and to send a stranger away unhappy, whether they're telling the truth or not than to fall victim to some weirdo.

No need to turn personal here just because up to that point she's the only Op posting on this. Paypal actually is pretty safe.. My paypal account is listed as Bamalamza, not much info going to be got there. So Lady Ru has a special man in her life and is expecting a baby. But, like most of the info shared here, in and of itself it's not dangerous.

Many people probably know that my teenage daughter plays these games, they might even know her real first name since it's a fairly common name. If they know what they're doing, they might even be able to tell what state she lives in. They of course know what state I live in. People could chat to either of us about that and they do, they ask questions, but there comes a point for both of us that is never crossed.

The problem comes because we are in a position to try and keep others safe, we have to assume that the people who post personal stuff don't know where to draw that line. And yes, that is part of our job. Ru removed the most dangerous posts/information, because that is her job. She left other posts that weren't so dangerous and posted a warning, so hopefully everyone will understand and take more care in the future.

So now, I will stop sermonizing and just ask that everyone play safe, have fun, but you don't need to tell anyone anything personal to do that.

  • mm. sorry Ru and Bama. I guess i did go a little too far with this?
Please delete this topic :x I'll be sure to think before I post another topic :(
