Drawing(s) :3 Critque please?

edited July 2008 in Artist Alley
My second drawing ever of a dog. This is what I've done today :3 Took me about four-five hours.

<img src="http://i27.tinypic.com/id4qjr.jpg"; alt="http://i27.tinypic.com/id4qjr.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

It's supposed to be a Golden Retriever :) However, it somewhat looks like a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever to me o.0 Anyways, I know there are a few lines not needed here and there, but, what do you think?

I know my fur/hair stinks =/ If you could help me out on that, that would be great! I'm trying different things with a pencil, because, I don't have any computer programs =/

I'm going to see if I can lineart this on paint xD

  • The dogs face seems to curl down unnaturaly...you should try and straighten it up a bit. The eyes need more expression to them. The body is rather well done, except the paws are much too small and the tail too fat. The starting of the back leg is nicely done. Good Try :P

  • What you should never do is copy a picture exactly and then copyright the drawing. It's not reference if you copy the picture exactly. Copying pictures exactly usually doesn't help the artist.

Sorry if I'm sounding mean, it's just that I keep seeing people say "reference" when they mean "copied the picture exactly".
Someone really should put a sticky up about "referencing".

The other drawing, however, is pretty good. I can't really help you out on fur. I don't have any fur tricks or anything. The only thing I can say is just keep practicing, and drawing fur will soon feel natural.
There are different ways of drawing fur, though. In this drawing you used the zig-zaggy lines, which is one way. The other way is to just do individual lines side by side. I'll draw an example on paint.

<img src="http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b230/aliieennss/simplefur.jpg"; alt="http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b230/aliieennss/simplefur.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

Try to make sure they're generally in the same direction.

Keep practicing ^^.

ohh, I didn't mean it like that =/ I'm sorry. It was just a project that I was doing. But thank you though! And no, it was not mean! I never really thought about it that way =) I'll take it down. Besides, I actually wanted advice on something that wasn't referenced (or copied as you say ^_^) With just one picture. So it works out ^^ And I understand how it doesn't help the artist out with just one picture. I was just trying to get a feel for drawing a dog :) But no worries!

And thank you for the advice! :) It'll come in handy! I'll try to get somemore pictures up tomorrow.

It's okay. Yeah, "copying" is okay to try and get a feel for drawing something you're not used to. But try not to show it around xD.
I still think I sound kinda mean xDDD.

You're welcome, I'm glad to help ^^.
  • the snoute, shorten it a lil, and make it ticker and it should look more acurate for the breed

back legs, try to get the > angle more in

here will show on paint (i am generaly horible at free paint in paint, so this is only to illustrate the natural hindleg angle sort of)

<img src="http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n164/Aryalil/virtualpups/dogbacklegangle.jpg"; alt="http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n164/Aryalil/virtualpups/dogbacklegangle.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

basicaly try to make an angle in there which mark the "knee" joint instead of leting it go straigth down

  • Thank you! That will help me out a tonnnnn. Because I was trying to do that, but when I did it looked funneh to me. But I guess I was drawing it wrong. :)

  • For the retriever picture, I found you took too long for something cartoony. Yes, practice makes perfect, but you should start with just a rough copy. A few lines here, a few lines there. Then, once you've made you're body, add choppy lines. Then, connect them, and voila, you have a good outline for a pic.

For the fur, maybe connected lines wasnt the best idea for you. Individual lines would create a more realistic look.

To critique you're picture, the eyes are too small and need more detail. If you are going for a cartoony look, maybe bigger and rounder. The nose would look nicer if it was coming off of the face slightly. The ears are too small for a retriever and too triangular. Maybe if you made them with sort of a raindrop shape it would like nicer. I find the legs too, straight? The right word is not coming to me. If you could make them flow better with the picture it would look great. The paws are nice, a bit small thought. I have no problem with the tail except it should look soft and pluffy as it a GR tail.

It wasn't meant as cartoony, but like all my drawings, it always does x.x

And thank you, I will try it on my next one. As I said, I tried making the legs realistic, but it never comes out right o.o So, I'm going to see about drawing a whippet and put it up here :) And I'm going to do what everyone has said ^_^ Probably won't be my best either. Just practicing as I want to get better at drawing dogs :3

  • Okay, I'm really sorry if I make things more confusing or I insult you with my crappyness but I attempted to do a redline for you xD

<img src="http://i26.tinypic.com/r91opf.jpg"; alt="http://i26.tinypic.com/r91opf.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

It just gives a rough idea of what I think you could change a bit :) I just realised how dodgy I made his jaw look... sorry about that x3
    6y2t1t.gif
  • Oh no you didn't insult me :) And it looks great! :3 The snout/muzzle/jaw xD looks great. The legs were how I pictured them o.o I can never get them like that! I need to study more anatomy x3
    r0oal1.png
  • Oh good :3 That was my exact problem for a long time. I spent weeks trying to get the legs a good length and all that other stuff right and it was so darn frustrating xD

It really helped me to practise drawing the skeleton on it's own, then drawing the muscles as if there was no skin or fur. After that I found the anatomy much easier. There are plenty of good pictures on the internet to guide you too :D
    6y2t1t.gif
  • Thanks for the advice. I think I'll try that out. :D

  • also most dogs aint really rectangular even if we refer to dogs as qudratic or rectangular

in general they have a deeper chest and then angle up to the stumock

the base form of a dog is more like

black - basic angles (no not this rigid but just to give you an idea on directions, as thinking in simple terms makes it easier also when you need to draw detail)

red - exagerated lines to better clearly show which direction the black lines takes

blue - alternative base line angles

<img src="http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n164/Aryalil/sandboxfarm/baseanglesofdog.jpg"; alt="http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n164/Aryalil/sandboxfarm/baseanglesofdog.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

  • I probably didn't much as drawing a golden.. I just wanted more to give an idea of structure and things. Ignore my head and tail. xD Just wanted to give you an idea for placement.

<img src="http://i34.tinypic.com/2gwchw9.png"; alt="http://i34.tinypic.com/2gwchw9.png"; class="bb-image" />

I messed up on the front paws too. But they're evil in every view. So I place no blame on you. xDDD But yeah. I think you've got potential. If I can be halfway decent, you can be great. :D

Hind legs and paws are funnnnn. x3
