Doggie Just got

Well I went to the pet store today and was looking around and saw a bunch of fish I liked so I asked my mom if I could get a fish tank. She said yes well now I need to know of good places(that are not expensive) to get some fish from I prefer brightly colored fish and small fish(guppy size) I have had fish before but that was long ago.

  • Pets Supplies "Plus" has really cheap fish.
Don't get em from Wal-Mart, they don't take care of them and they die in like a week or 2. :|

  • Make sure you don't mix tropical fish and goldfish, goldfish make too much amonia to be healthy for tropical fish.

Petco (here anyway) has a warrenty on their fish; I recommend looking for a place that has a warrenty cause fish often don't make it past a few days if you get a lot at once, in my experience.
    Bye.
  • OK thanks guys I know the PetSmart has a warranty and I think the Petco does also so I will look there I might go to an actual store that sells that just fish.
  • Make sure you set the tank up and fill it and let it run a couple days at least before putting fish into it. I don't know how big a tank you have, but zebra's and neon tetras are pretty fish and hardy enough to survive until you tank cycles through and becomes stable.

  • yeah I was going to wait tell like monday-Tuesday before getting the fish and putting them in it.
  • Your tank needs cycling for preferably 2-ish weeks for the fish to not suffer. Having a filter in there means that water goes through the sponge and in that sponge you need enough of the 'good' bacteria to kill of the bad kind. Good bacteria usually takes about 2 weeks to accumulate so that the bad bacteria does not take over first. (Which is usually what happens when you add your fish prematurely, they poo. That is bad bacteria).

Anyways... Good fish to start out with are usually Danios and White Cloud Mountain Minnows, aswell as male guppies. In a fish tank there is usually a rule of one inch per gallon. So if you have a ten gallon you could probably fit 10 danios. Be sure to not add female guppies, because 99 percent of female guppies are pregnant. They store sperm, and therefore can continue to give birth up to 7 times with the same males sperm. You may end up with quite a few more guppies than planned. Since you like bright coloured fish guppies are probably right for you. Just males though.

I have found a nice place to buy fish is Big Al's, I am not sure if it is a Canadian chain, but I believe the U.S. has some. They are in-expensive, care for their fish properly, and in most if not all cases offer a warranty on their fish.

  • I have Mollys xD

Im trying to breed mine though...
  • I used to have a fish tank..I had guppies, platies, mollies, and 1 female betta. I was so mad because one of the mollies attacked and killed the female betta. >< Mom said they'd be okay together. I guess not. But that same molly chased all the other fish constantly too...the other molly was fine with the other fish though. :?

But if you get female guppies and they end up having babies, chances are most of the babies will get eaten by the guppies and any other fish in the tank, however if one baby survives and its a male...you're screwed if you don't want a lot of guppies XD We started with 4 female guppies and 1 male and ended up with 2 10 gallon tanks of just guppies.
    Bye.
