• Teddy bear hamsters
Little things are cute,and loveable
I had two ^^
  • Rats. They're great pets. Very lovable, cheap, and are very smart

  • Snakes do PWN rodents any day XD Literally.

I had Syrian hamsters. They were nice :D AVOID SIBERIAN DWARF HAMSTERS. Those things are friggin DEMONIC. Sorry to anyone that likes them, but...I've never seen one that hasn't tried to attack me through the cage. The one I had was spawn of Satan himself. We brought her back, we didn't care that they wouldn't give us a refund XD We were like "Here, take her, just take her!" XD she was -that- mean. And I'm not one to sell/give away animals either.
    Bye.
  • Fancy Mice are really cute and sweet.. and cheap. I had some for like 10minutes but my mom made us take them back. They were really sweet for those 10 minutes though. We could pick them up out of the box. :D

They come in a lot of different colors too!

  • Rats are the best rodent pets, by far. They're smart and loving. I've owned a ton of them. The only bad part is they don't live very long, but I think the same can be said for most rodents.

  • I like rats, they are smart and sweet!

I though have gerbils xD I love them. They are pretty sweet, they love to dig and tunnel in bedding, some love to sit on your shoulder.
And, unlike hamsters (usually), they usually don't bite. If they do, something really happened they didn't like. I've handled the gerbils at our shelter, who've been there since they were born (we had babies come in and stuff >.<) And they've never bit me, and they are barely handled. I've only been bitten by one, but it was my fault. I was holding him and he got nervous, and he bit me. But I've held him since then and he's been sweet. :D

Also, Gerbils, I kid you not, barely have a smell. I've gone 6 weeks without changing their bedding, and the only smell that I got was when my nose was practically in the tank. But normally I can go about 3-4 weeks without cleaning it.

And unlike hamsters, they are awake off and on 24 hours a day, they don't just sleep all day. What's also nice is over time they take to your habits. Like sleeping when you sleep, being awake when your their. Mine tend to be awake sometime between 3pm and 8pm and then sleep till about 10pm, and are up for a little bit then. I don't know their other habits well cause I'm at school. XD

Plus gerbils are cheap.
Food is about $4-5 for a 4lbs bag.
Bedding can range, but usually not all that expensive. Mine is $5 a bag and a bag lasts me two cleanings, which is what, 2-3 months?
When you first buy the stuff, it'll be a little more, you have to get their "habitat" and stuff.

Gerbils also tend to live 3-5 years, but I've heard of gerbils older then that!

If you get gerbils though, you HAVE to get two. Having only one can make them lonely, even depressed, and even die younger. :/

If you decided to get a pair of gerbils talk to me XD I know lots. I also know a bit about rats too, since I'm thinking of getting a pair in the future, so I've done some reading xD Same with mice and hamsters.

Wow I typed a lot >_>
    Please PM if I win.

  • Thank you all ^_^
I will consider these thoughs, no siberian dwarf hamsters xD
Please PM if I win anything.
  • also I would recomend not getting a mouse unless you plan on cleaning the Cage ALOT they smell realy bad, oh and also dont get a cage with anything plastic on it, when I had 2 mice are cage had plastic tunnels and one of the mice broke threw it and was riunning around on my floor and scared me to death untill i realised it was mine.
  • I know you asked for rodents.. but...
Chickens. Seriously.

First off, they ARE small. =D

Secondly, they're easy to care for. At first you will have to keep them inside or in a cage until they're big enough to fend off any of your other pets. However, they CAN be litter trained, just takes a while and a lot of corn. =p

They're also quiet, which throws most people off. I've had my chickens for a couple months, had them since they were a couple days old. Already they're big enough to fend off two cats and run around the backyard by themselves.

Also, they're awake during the day, and sleep once the sun goes down. However, if you are going to keep, you need a night light for them or else they'll scream. They hate being in the dark.

They're also cheap. Chicks cost about $5 a piece. A bag of starter feed is about $3 a bag, which'll last long enough for them to eat the intermediate variety of food. Dry grass is good enough bedding for them, and most feed lots will give you that for free in large quantities.

xDD chickens are quiet? >.> Mine are always skwaking about something if its the rabbit or a shadow. They are not cheap the cages cost over 100 bucks, their food cost $15 when they are adults, they peck, they smell xP xD But Kazuko is right they are pretty awesome creatures and unique not many people (who don't live on farms) own them x3 I live in a cold place so I bet its cheaper keeping them in your house or garage if you live in a warm place. I let my chickens run free in the summer, but they stay in a heated coop in the winter eeek the electricity bill is crazy o.O

I recomend: Rats, Syrian (teddy bear) hamsters (no dwarf, some are very evil  ) Gerbles, chinchillas (don't know much about them, but my friend has one and its so soft and lovable <3)
    spring1ys7.png
Willing to slave art for a sponcer upgrade.
  • xD My chickens are -really- quiet unless the dog decides she wants to sniff them, or someone picks them up.

They're cheap where I live. Food is $15 for... *checks the bag size* 50lbs bag. ^^ Also, you don't -need- a cage. As chicks, they'll settle for being in a box at night and loose during the day. As adults, they don't mind just having a bit of shed to sleep at night. =p My dad built the cage and coop, so it was pretty cheap. ^^ My friend didn't even have a coop or cage. She just put chicken wire around her pool fence and let them run free, with access to the shed in the back. xD

My chickens don't peck, because they're highly socialized. =p Like I said, we got them since they were a day or two old, so they're well used to people. They'll follow people/dogs/etc around and only peck if you have food in your hand. ^^ And mine don't smell either! <3

I live in an extremely warm place. It gets to about 115 degrees outside during the summer, but chickens can take that. xD Same thing with it dropping to 30-40 degrees in the winter- no coop heating required. ^^

  • I have *counts* 10 chickens ^^ 5 roosters, 5 hens. Soon I'll only have 2 roosters though >> Mom's giving away two and killing one (against my will).

If you do get chicks, hope for hens. Roosters -can- be nice, but there's always that chance that they'll get aggressive. I have scars from one of my roosters; he's huge and his favorite activity is chasing and kicking people. One of my other roosters loves attacking goats, dogs, and little boys. The other 3 aren't aggressive...for now. I just hope the one non-aggressive one that isn't being given away stays friendly. And roosters are, obviously, the loud ones XD

My hens make soft noises constantly, wonderful little noises ^^ but after they lay an egg, they squwak like its going out of style. They aren't socialized, because if you go near them, Phin comes after you (naughty rooster). But if you spend enough time with a chicken, they'll start to follow you around like mama :P

Chickens do smell, they smell to high heaven, and they poop everywhere (If they're kept outside). They also attract foxes and other preditors, and a fox or something WILL take them out of your yard if they aren't in a extremely safe fence that they can't get out of, and a fox can't get into. So far, we've had a fox get 1 rooster and 1 hen. My friend gave us one of her hens and one of her roosters because a fox got, you ready for this?, 7 of her chickens in 3 days.

I don't recommend roosters, but hens are lovely ;3 They're all beautiful. I'll fish around for some pics of mine and get back to you.
    Bye.
  • Okay...I need recent pictures of them >>; they've grown so much since I took these...they're complete adults now.

<a href="http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311/Kite_Katsumi/Outdoor Pets/860835.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311 ... 860835.jpg - Hannibal, the one that gave me scars and loves kicking people.
<a href="http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311/Kite_Katsumi/Outdoor Pets/860841.jpg" target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311 ... 860841.jpg - Ping & Pong. He's the one that attacks goats, dogs, and little boys.

I don't have pics of Loomis, Hutch, or Swink...Phin's brothers. I'll haveta get some sometime. They all look similar to him though, but of course there's differences :P
    Bye.
  • haha rats for sure, Ive had pet rats, they are awesome, very lovable lil critters... chickens aren't quiet lol... we have 23... obnoxious boogers, they are just chicks now and already the roosters are cock fighting... I wouldn't reccomend them as pets, they are smelly loud and poop everywhere, if your going to get a bird, a duck.... they are loud when little especially when alone but once they realize your nice, they will love you... they smell too... back to rodents definitely rats

  • Chickens are great pets, but the cost can add up. Yes, the chickens themselves are only 5-15 dollars, but once you get the proper cages, water dishes, food and everything else, it cost alot. When I got my first chickens, it cost around $200, but my dad made the large coop and pen outside, saving quite alot of cash.
As said before, they do smell, but as long as their cages are properly cleaned, that can be avioded.
They are quite noisey, hens or roosters. I would not reconmend a rooster, as they are louder, and usually have a 'temper'. They tend to be louder in the morning. Mine would start squaking right at 6 every morning, waiting to be feed

They are very good pets, no matter what
    sappeh-1.png
  • Well, my chickens are nice 'n quiet and keep to themselves unless their 'mom' is around (IE: Me, my friend Henrie, or my dad). xD Like I said, all three of my chickens (all of them hens) are box-trained, so eh. *sweatdrop*

Also, you can buy them with gender guarantees, depending on where you get them. Two of mine are guaranteed hens, and the third has no promises, but we're 90% sure it's a she. xD

  • I currently have 4 gerbils. ...I had 8. =(
I would highly recommend them. ^^;

They are playful, friendly, energetic little things and loads of fun!
If you socialize them young, they can be great with anyone.
As Boz already mentioned though, they don't like to live alone.

And really?
They don't stink!! Major plus!!
I have 4 gerbils and one hamster.
I cleaned all their cages out about 4 days ago.
The hamster ALREADY stinks and the gerbils are just fine!
I have both 2 girls and 2 boys, neither one smells worse than the other, they are both fine.

:D

  • I have 2 chinchillas, they are great pets. We are going to breed them, the babies are soo cute! They are very loving pets, and rodents, but the size of a puppy.

  • I breed dwarf hamsters. Check out my latest post. U should definatly get some!
  • Herse my opinion (just an opinion though):
Rats:
I've never had rats before but if I got a small rodent and it wasn't a rabbit i'd definately pick them. Aunt raised them for a LONG time and said they are adorable and smart and dont smell to bad and she loved them. I have held rats before and played w/ them (mom wont let me have one but I can still play w/ them sometimes) and they haven't bit that I remember.

Dwarf Hammies:
I've had 2 before. One was pretty sweet and only bit sometimes but the other would bite very often and it can hurt. They draw the blood easily. They dont stink to terribly much though. Kid who's gonna be my step sis soon has one and it bites her a lot and isn't very nice to her. Again, I think some have better temperments than others as is with all animals.

Mice:
To me its a no no. All the siblings have them and they stink, they bite, aren't really able to be tamed, and they are just kinda a pain. Sis has been bit a lot. Some are nicer than others but they all stink. The cages are still kinda stinky the day after you clean. So it takes a lot of cleaning.
Probably not the worst ever pets but not the best. I have been bitten by them before also.

Chickens:
Chickens to me are luff. I've had two hens before and they were mostly potty trained (in a way to put training them). They were adorable to watch and were quite tame. If you opened their cage they'd fly and sit on your shoulder or just sit w/ you. I have been pecked about twice by mine but it didn't hurt much and it was because she saw something on my hand and thought it was food.

Thats just my humble opinion on these animals. Congrats on getting one though. Hope this helped somewhat.
  • My Idea.. RUSSIAN dwarf hammys about 1/3 of the size of a siryian Really fast though but only bite when they feel it nessisery(sp?) like rabbits but not and rabbits arent as fast

  • I was seriously thinking chickens, and my dad said a GOOD mabey. But I needed a backup plan
Please PM if I win anything.
  • I still vouch for guinea pigs. Only 1 in 400 will bite people. They nip, but it doesn't break the skin. ust a little pinch, and you can train them not too. They also bond closely with you if handled often.
    2008_02Anim1Cobalt1.gif
  • I own one, want something new
Please PM if I win anything.

Wow, I really must be unlucky XD 3/5 of my guinea pigs that I've ever owned have been biters. Not nippers...full on biters.
    Bye.
  • XD, I got that out of a guinea pig book I had once. It might not be totally accurate, but every guinea I've known doesn't bite. Mine got out of her nipping stage pretty fast, too.

  • Lucky XD We have to wear thick gloves to hold mine. They bite like its going out of style. Hard too. ><;
    Bye.
  • My advice is Chickens.......I had this one, where it would sit up on my shoulder. (+ you get eggs!! lol)
