• :? Pet stores shouldn't sell dogs at all, they're from puppy mills 99.9% of the time, and they have diseases and stuff. Fish, rabbits, rodents, reptiles, fine, but no dogs or cats.

  • When we went there one time we asked to see a bernese moutain dog and the lady told us about her parents and such. I think her mother competed in shows and such. :D

  • Pretty much everything in a petstore comes from a mill, Jazz. Snake mills, lizard mills, rabbit mills, ferret mills, etc.
    Bye.
  • Omg I want this English Bulldog at our local Pet Store. I sit there and play with it in the dog run all the time. D;
I would love to own my own pet store some day and have all kinds of animals. xD

  • Most public pe stores get thier pups from puppy mills. They will deny it. One pet store said a (7 week old) puppy had sniffles when it really had parvo. They give the pups- no matter what age- a huge dose of antibiotics and it is supposed to "Make it feel better or prevent desieses".

  • Guess I am lucky cause my Pet Store guy is awesome. ;]
No Puppy Mill dogs. No crappy reptiles/rodents. All in great shape/proper care. I would buy a dog/reptile/rodent from him in a heart beat.
Actually we got the leopard geckos from him and going to be getting a rabbit if I can talk Josh into it.

  • i'm not sure where the dogs come from at my petland but i know the other animals come from breeders, there is this one guy that comes in alot and he knows how to breed most of the animals there and i guess he sometimes will breed random animals for the store when they ask him too. i'll ask about the dogs tomarrow, but usually pet store puupies come from breeders who couldn't sell one of the puppies or something. usually they are just the runt or something like that of the litter, but i doubt they come from puppy mills

  • Zoe, you are lucky. I got Molly from a farm, and her mom was poisend w/ antifreeze, so she is a border/ aussie mix.
That sounds really irresponsible... he's probably a puppymiller or backyard breeder at least.

  • In my book, no responsible breeder will sell a puppy to a pet store :]

I'm actually against pet stores selling not only dogs and cats, but rabbits too.
Actually I'd love it if pet stores only sold fish. But that'd never happen.

And congrats on your first job, Mac!
i talked to my co-worker and i asked him where the puppies came from and he said that they get them all from breeders, they don't get their dogs from the petland franchise, they have someone find breeders for the puppies, and the cats are rescues

and today was my first day, and the pupies were really nice, the husky there has these beautiful icy blue eyes and there was a bulldog that was very cute and really sweet.

  • Hmm... yeah right.

I strongly doubt that. Too many bad peoples that lie, like the one who stole meh iPod.

  • no, he wouldn't lie about that, he is training to be a vet and he cares about these animals alot, and they have someone find breeders to get the puppies. the person who does that is a breeder herself, but they don't get her puppies. the petland i work at has had the people from the corperation come in and say that the kennal is actually one of the best kept in the region.
and we gave some of the puppies their meds and vaccinations today. the golden retrievers were quiet then the lab was crying a little

  • Mac, I'm not saying this to you, or trying to put you down, ok? But I got to get this out about Pet stores in general..

A pet store around here started to sell puppies. I went in there once when they did. Now they don't. And I'm guessing it's cause sooo many people refused to shop there as long as they sold puppies.

Honestly, Pet stores don't need to be selling cats and dogs. In our shelter alone there's over 100 cats that need homes. And right now we got over 20 dogs. And if we have some irresponsible owners are breeding puppies to sell to pet stores how are shelter dogs EVER going to find a home? I've seen those pet store puppies for sale at like $600. I would NEVER pay $600 for a puppy that I don't barely know anything about it's history and stuff. Unlike if you get the puppy straight from the breeder you can actually MEET the puppy's parents, talk to the owner, get a history of the dog.

Ok, yeah with shelter dogs you don't get that, BUT your not paying $600! I've seen some of those dogs at the pet stores and I know I've seen the same breeds in the paper for sale, AKC registered, and they are a couple hundred dollars less, and probably come from a responsible owner.

Another thing... If someone's breeding dogs then they've made a commitment. If a breeder sells an "extra" puppy that never got bought or the "runt" that's being irresponsible. When you choose to breed you must be ready to keep ALL the puppies if they don't get sold. That's just how it works. Selling to a pet store should NEVER be an option for a breeder.

That's just my opinion.

Oh, another thing. Lets take PetSmart for example, they don't sell cats, they let the local shelter house shelter cats their for a better chance at getting adopted. That's what a pet store should do.

And Like I said before...
In my book, no responsible breeder will sell a puppy to a pet store :]

And again, Mac, not saying this too you. You've done nothing wrong. :] It's those pet stores that sell puppies that get me upset! D:
