Small Indoor Pet Suggestions?

I'm looking for ideas of a small indoor pet. So any suggestions and/or information you can give, would be awesome!

Room is NO problem, as we're planning on having an entire room occupied to the new pet. Meaning another iguana would be great... But I'm still looking for more ideas.

Qualities We Dont Want:
Cant be nocturnal. But if it is, please still add something.
Has to be kid-friendly... Meaning most likely no snakes.
Dont want turtles.
Has to be something that is accustomed to being handled.
Dont really care for Rabbits, Ferrets, etc. But still are good ideas.
Largest can be 6 ft. long, about 2 ft. tall. No dogs, or cats are wanted.

Any suggestions are wanted.
If you've ordered anything, please be patient with me. Having volcano/ash troubles. Msg me for more info, and I'll get back to you asap!! Thankies!!

  • I have seen guide horses in the stores here in Alaska.

The reason why I'm not so sure on getting another Iguana... let alone a reptile, is cause they're cold-blooded. And my female Iguana I dont think really cared for our house, as the normal temp. was around 65 degrees, and no matter how hard we tried, her room only stayed around 70-75 degrees, so she wasnt able to roam in the house much during the winter months.

So maybe just something that is warm-blooded.

  • Rats. They are some of the best small pets I have owned. They are very intelegant, and nice, if raised properly. They are very active and love being handled. I can get much more info if you want

Really? I had the sweetest guinea ever. She was my first pet, I had her in 4th-7th grade. When I first got her, she was pretty skittish, and whenever she was scared, she would nip me. I taught her not to by tapping her lightly on the nose whenever she tried to nip me. I didn't hurt her, she just didn't like it, so she stopped XD

If you're interested in a guinea, I can tell you a lot about them. They're my favorite domestic animal, actually. I suppose it depends on the quality and socialization of the guinea. (Yes, they also need to be socialized. To noises and stuff, mostly though. No other pets. They're naturally afraid of anything, because in thw wild their only defense is to hide from predators. and predators are anything that moves.) I made sure to socialize her as a baby. I took her out for 30 minutes to an hour and thirty minutes every day, and made sure to introduce her to kids and all age groups and such. She was still a bit skittish around really riled up children, but as long as they don't make any super-sudden movements she was fine. I also vacuumed and made other loud noises near her cage often and made sure to reasure her afterwards and give her a treat.

They're great lap pets, and the babies are really fun. The adults don't usually run away, but the babies are crazy. Although you can't play rough with them, it's fun for kids to pet and feed guinea pigs. PM me if you'd like more info, Muddy Paws.

All good things must come to an end. All endings will begin new good things.

The ones that are skittish, I think its because they were 5ish months old when we got them, and they had spent the whole lives in a cage where no one could touch them, in a petstore. I didn't hold them much cause it seemed to stress them out a lot when I tried to catch them to hold them. Now, I only touch them when we have to clip their nails or clean their cage. They're 3-4 years old, around or about. I don't think they have much longer, at least, my nice ones died at 2 years. I don't know average lifespan or anything. I might give them away though. Only thing stopping me is the fact that I won't know how they're being treated, or if they're still alive, etc. That's one reason why its so hard for me right now, since my mom is selling my two horses (the two that are mine. The other two are the whole family's) I'm terrified they won't be treated right. >< She's also giving away 3 of the chickens I raised from hatchlings. I'm sick to my stomach worrying about that. I don't want them to end up on someone's plate. ><

..Well that turned into a mini rant 0o Sorry ^^;
    Bye.
  • :( sorry Kite.

Yah, that might have made the difference. Dunno. I held mine all the time, whether she felt like it or not, but I shortened the time period if she was being cranky. I've found that male guineas are more cuddly and females are more reserved, but that's just me. I've owned a female, though, so it's not like they're bad or anything :P

  • We're thinking about getting a young-ish Guinea Pig. The pig shouldnt be skiddish, as we're going to get one as young as possible, around 7-8 wks. old (thats what I've been told that they can go to their owners).
But if you handle it a lot when it's young, would it still be skiddish? Cause we're looking for an animal that'd be able to sorta "cuddle", and be handled a lot.

Any idea on how long Guinea's live? I havent been able to find a suitable answer yet. Well one that'd be pretty accurate. Im only finding 1-3 yrs. If anyone else can prove that wrong, please let me know.

Thanks for ALL the great answers. If anymore ideas come about, please feel free to give them. As we wont be getting the new pet until May-ish.

  • I'd actually would rather perfer another Iguana or Snake, but with the kiddies around it might be a bad idea. Plus with the temperatures in Alaska, it's pretty much a challenge everyday just to keep the temperature suitable for them.
But I loved my Snake and Iguana to death. The Iguana and Snake would actually go into the bed (if they escaped) to get warm. And I liked it. But just something smaller, and easier to care for would be good.
