RIP Umbree

Yup...my anorexic Ball Python, who broke her anorexia (eating once) and then went anorexic again, was dead when I got home this afternoon.

Based on her position and condition, I'd say she was struggling to breathe when she died, and she was obviously very underweight.

I have mixed feelings about this. Needless to say, I'm sad and I'll miss her. But also, I feel as if maybe if I had left her at that store, she would have lived. This is the 3rd snake we've had go anorexic and die. 3/4 dying. That's not a good thing. But we've been in constant contact with breeders (one of which was trained as a vet tech as well) and such, asking them what to do to get them to eat (and we brought one of them for a visit to the vet tech breeder, the snake, Songo, actually died in her care). We tried everything they said to do, and it made them eat once at the most.

Steve is going to take her body to Petco and demand a refund (even though the 15 day warrenty is far expired, but he won't listen to me. ("You can talk all yuh want, I'm not gonna listen. I'll get my refund." yet he seems to forget that the refund wouldn't be HIS, because I paid the $90 for her with my own money)

I'm hoping he doesn't make a scene.

At any rate, we've decided to stick with Moeru, the only healthy snake we've had. He's never skipped a meal, in fact he's quite the glutton. XP

Pictures of Umbree; please remember her as the sweet and beautiful animal that she was.

<a href="http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311/Kite_Katsumi/Snakes/1630888.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311 ... 630888.jpg
<a href="http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311/Kite_Katsumi/Snakes/1630876.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311 ... 630876.jpg
<a href="http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311/Kite_Katsumi/Snakes/1608944.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311 ... 608944.jpg
<a href="http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311/Kite_Katsumi/Snakes/1608943.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311 ... 608943.jpg
<a href="http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311/Kite_Katsumi/Snakes/1608941.jpg"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p311 ... 608941.jpg

  • I got Songo and Mozart from PJ - <a href="http://www.pjcreptiles.com"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">www.pjcreptiles.com they both died. I got Umbree from Petco (don't scold me please x.x it wasn't planned). And I got Moeru (the healthy one) from a person who had bought the whole clutch from a breeder to resell for a higher price (I didn't know this at first).
    Bye.
  • AWWWW! kite....that really sucks. a couple weeks ago you and i were talking about that...but with your other snake. i send my condolences. :(

umbree was a gorgeous snake...

  • Omg. I'm so sorry kite. She was a beautiful snake, and i'm so sorry for your lose. My Brothers gecko I beleive has anarexia, he/she won't eat. The guy at the pet store said that he need like 10 hours of sleep, but I don't think it is working, we even got him a cage. And you can see how skinny Spunky(the gecko) is. It is not good.
    Froggy.png
  • Thanks Bree. I hope the Gecko recovers :( What kind of Gecko is it, and what are you feeding it?
    Bye.
  • Lepord Gecko and were feeding it mill worms, my mom won't allow crickets in the house. We hope he gets better soon. He sin't lookin good
    Froggy.png
  • Yeah...he probably won't do well if he isn't fed crickets. Meal worms are usually only recommended as a treat once or twice a week for lizards, they should almost never be fed as the main source of food. I know someone who refused to feed her lizard crickets, and only fed him meal worms...growth defects&stunted growth, tail broke and fell off (not normal for Beardies), etc.

You could also try giving him calcium powder, and Fluker's Incectivore/Carnivore Emergency Aid. Its a nutrition supplement usually available at petstores.

But if your mom isn't willing to let you guys feed him crickets, I hate to say it, but he might not be well off in your care...I hope I didn't offend you, I'm just being honest.

Also, your statement "we even got him a cage" concerns me. What were you keeping him in before you got him a cage? A cage is an absolute must. Leos need 10-20isg gallon aquariums, depending on their size, if I remember right.
    Bye.
  • Oh, see I was thinking maybe you got them from the same person, and that that coule be a source for them going anorexic (sp).

What causes a snake to do that?
    Please PM if I win.

  • I did get Songo and Mozart from the same person.

Many things can cause anorexia in snakes. Sometimes, I've been told, they just...stop eating. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, though.
    Bye.
  • The people that we talked to say that mill worms are fine just not wax worms<< Those are diffently a treat. We had him in a tank, but we changed his tank so that he had a cave to hide in, so we took out the log, but basically everything is in the same place. They are suppose to get 10+ hours of sleep daily and that might make him want to eat. I hope he get better soon, I really do. I just hope he doesn't have any paricites.
    Froggy.png
  • Who did you talk to about it? Wax worms are fattyyyyyy. >< Yick.

How is his tail looking?
    Bye.
  • Actually my mom talked to I don't know how like 5 pet stores+. His tail is getting thinner. Were going to take him to the vet soon if he doesn't start eating.
    Froggy.png
  • Petstores don't always know what's best for the animals x.x their job is to sell them anyway they can. I'd email a breeder.

I'd also take him to the vet now, if his tail is getting thinner. That's a bad sign. I would've taken Umbree and Mozart to the vet, but Steve said no.
    Bye.
