Should I?

I need a job. I need my own money, I can't stop mooching off of dad anymore, we're too low on money for me to keep bugging him for stuff that I could live without, but want (*points at VP*). And this way I could at least help pay for the food for my own animals.
I've also found myself bored as hell for the past 2 weeks, only thing I can think of to do is IM (Edel is the only one I really talk to consistantly on IM now and she's only on at night), VP (nothing to do but train and that gets boring XD), Play with Pocco and Sysco (can't play well in the house cause they're only allowed in my room and the snow is almost over their heads right now. It was a week ago, it was so funny to watch them hop around like Bambi to get through the snow XD), hold my snakes (can't be held for 3 days after being fed, fed once a week. Can't hold them too often or they could get sick or stressed, specially Umbree cause she's fairly new), and go to friends' houses (only 3 friends invite me anywhere and not often).

Now the main issue here isn't that I don't want to work at all. I just don't want to work in fast food...I want to work at a petstore. Which brings up the main issue.

I want to work at Petco. They only hire 18+ year olds. It'll be another year and 2 months or so before I can apply there.

Petland will hire me now (assuming I meet the other requirements, not just age). Thing is...I don't agree with Petland. All their cages are too small, they overstuff their cages...2 puppy mill puppies crammed in each small cage 9with wire bottoms so all the toy puppies' feet fall though and some of them can't walk or stand right)...their reptile cages are appaulingly small and they stuff more than one in each...there's always a dead reptile and countless dead fish when I go there. I'm surprised they haven't been shut down. The good side is employees are allowed to play with puppies and such if customers don't. I go there just to socialize the puppies currently but I don't get paid at all and I don't go in regularly. But on the up side I could try to take better care of the animals there than they do now.

Petland is my only option though. I'll be applying this summer if I decide to work there. There's a Pet Quarters too but they're farther away and I don't think they hire 16 or 17 year olds.

So..should I apply at Petland this summer? I'll be talking to mom and dad about it too, possibly my guidence counsler at school too. (Of course he'll tell me to do it though, they're paid to tell students to get jobs and go to college).
Bye.

I'm not on much anymore, If I win anything PM me.... Thanks
  • That's true, too. Thanks ^^
    Bye.
  • I'd do it. Even if it's working with animals in bad environments, you could at least make them a little bit happier.

  • Thanks Dreamy, that's what my mom said too. My dad didn't really care, he just wants me to get a job and 'earn my keep'.
    Bye.

  • I refuse to work anywhere but a petstore XD Except the shelter but they only accept vulenteer work, which I'd do too, but it doesn't pay so dad wants me to get a 'real' job instead.
    Bye.
  • I wouldn't do it.. if you work at a place like that you have to try to sell the sickly, deformed puppies even to people that shouldn't have animals.

It would most likely be your job to sell the animals.. I couldn't do it knowing I helped sell a puppymill dog.. when you sold it, it just opened up another spot for the next puppymill puppy.. and would possibly break the new owner's heart when their cute little puppy turned up with a horrible genetic problem...

  • Why do you refuse to work anywhere but a petstore?

I know what you mean, Eagles. I'd be prewarning everyone if I knew an animal there wasn't healthy or 'the animal for them'. I'd probably get fired :P No one really buys puppies there anyway cause even marked down they're all over $1000. (This is Maine, no one has that kinda money for a dog).

Good news is there's a rumor that the state is trying to stop Petland from continuing to sell puppies and kittens cause they come from mills. I hope its true...

I'll only work at a petstore because the only other work here is fast food (I'm not doing that, personally I find it degrading) and Target (boringggg). Nothing that even remotely interests me. Ugh, I wish I was friggin 18 so I could apply at Petco.
    Bye.
  • I'd say work there, and here's why.

1) You're taking their money. Always fun =D

2) You care about the animals, and you'll be able to get some pet store experience under your belt that will do you a lot of good on your resume.

3) When someone says, "I don't know, they're awfully expensive," that will open you up an opprtunity to say, "Well, at the shelter they dogs are a lot less pricey, and they are already spayed, neutered, and vaccinated. Also, did you know that mixed breeds have longer lives, are more intelligent, healthier, blah de blah blah?" And if questioned, you can say, "Hey, at least they'll be coming back for pet food, since they weren't going to be buying a dog anyway."

4) There are more, but I can't think of any right now XD

  • 1) lmao

2) True

3) I'd do that too..and since I own a good amount of the animals they sell there I'd be able to talk about how they are as pets. Possibly stop someone from making a mistake and getting an animal they can't handle or that isn't what they thought.

4) Okay XD
    Bye.
  • I don't think your manager would appreciate you telling people to go somewhere else, even if it was a shelter. :P People have pet shops to make money, not to educate people on what is a good pet, what isn't, and that puppies in pet shops come from puppymills, ya know?

They have an income because people buy the cute puppies or cool reptiles on impulse, then think about it later. If you were heard telling people not to get the pet or to go to a shelter you'd probably get in trouble.

.. but if you're desperate to have money, do it. Work there.

  • I recommended her to suggest it to her manager on the grounds that the person is concerned about the price, in which case she can tell her manager that this way they'll come back and buy pet supplies, since she couldn't sell them a puppy.

  • I know what you mean, but dad says I have to get a job this summer and earn my keep. Fastfood is hard work believe it or not...Kyle works two jobs, one of them is at Wendy's. He said he hates it there because he's often stuck doing all the dishes by himself and they keep piling up as he does them @_@; I couldn't handle that. And I'd be no good at the drive thru and I can't cook XD I'm not good with money and that's really all Target and the other stores like that around here are about (cashiering). Its either those two or Petland.

I could look into Pet Quarters...the only dogs/cats they have are ones that come there for a week from the shelter to sort of advertize for the shelter and possibly get someone interested in adopting them. I love that, but I don't think they hire 16 or 17 year olds. I'll try to look into it anyway next time we get down there (rarely though, they don't really sell much for animals or products there. Its a small store).
    Bye.
  • You should look in some locally owned stores. My sister works at a health food store that is owned by a lady that lives around here. She (my sister) works only a few days a week and each paycheck is like.. $250. All she does is stock and run the cash register once in a while.

Good luck!
    6on02p.jpg20svx47.png
  • Thanks Eagles ^^

Petland is locally operated according to their commertials...bleh.
    Bye.
  • I love the PetSmart near me, they have rescue dogs in there once a week and such, they are actually providing good to the dog world. Their cages are clean for their rodents, and the cat area doesnt smell at all, like most cat cages do in pet store.

Do you have a PetSmart nearby?

And, local operated pet stores, usually suck like that. Luckily the place I found beyond disturbing, was closed down. They used to let their dogs run around the store, and there was a Basset this one time, and he was walking sideways, and his one back leg was either deformed, or he had hip problems. So sad :( Im happy they're gone though.

Eh, I would rather work at a non-animal place, than deal with that every workday, wouldn't be fun at all.

Or maybe you could work at a Veterinary office. They offer jobs for people to help take care of dogs that are boarded there and whatnot, would be a good experience. Though, not every place offers this... I have only seen one so far.

Or maybe an actual dog boarding place, or a groomers or something. Maybe take on dog training ^.^
All good things must come to an end. All endings will begin new good things.

  • The nearest Petsmart is like...45 mins away ^^;

I'm glad that place got closed down ><;

I couldn't handle being in a vet office that often. I hate vet offices. The vets could save almost everyone's dog, but not mine.

I'll see if there's any dog boarding places, but to be honest...I like snakes more than dogs, and I doubt any dog boarding places would have many snakes around XD
