:( My poor dog...

edited December 2007 in General Discussion
Well, about a month ago, I came home and there was blood all over the house. My first thought was, "Who got murdered?"
Upon finding that everyone was safe and sound, we realized it was one of the dogs. Turns out, Buddy (my spastic, tailwacking pup) had a sore on the end of his tail. He had been chewing at it and it was getting irritated, kind of like a hot spot (but the vet said it wasn't, just similar.)
After we took him to the vet, they bandaged it and gave us a weeks worth of antibiotic so it wouldn't get infected. If it gets infected, they will have to amputate it.
After about a week, we took the bandage off. Things were looking up, it looked pretty good. We put a new, clean bandage on. We came home to find that he had ripped it off during the day and had irritated it again. He was flinging blood again, so we rewrapped it. We repeated this process over the course of 3 weeks, us putting on a bandage, and him ripping it off and making his tail worse.
We finally got one bandage to stay, and when it came time to take it off, we were excited. Would his tail be better? Yup, it did. We decided to leave his tail without a bandage because it looked so good.
The next morning, the sore was bigger than ever and was bleeding all over the place. He would no longer let us touch his tail, and he stopped wagging it(which is INSANE for him, he is one of those crazy, spastic tail waggers that knocks things off counters and wags his whole body).
We took him to the vet again today. They put an Elizabethan collar on him (those big plastic ones that go on their collar that they give you after your dog has surgery so it doesn't irritate the spot). (They gave us a really long one so he couldn't reach the end of the tail, as we had previously attempted the shorter Elizabethan that my female dog had used after she was spayed).
They shaved the sore spot and told us to leave off any bandages, as right now it was so bloody and wet that wrapping it could cause an infection as well. He also has medication. If he irritates it now, he will have to have his tail amputated.
All we can do is wait :(

  • Poor guy ;-;

At least he doesn't need his tail to survive, it could be worse. But I hope he gets better and stops hurting soon!
    Bye.
  • Me too :(
Right now, he's moping in the corner. He's really depressed about the Elizabethan collar. I would take a picture, but I think he's already really traumatized for one day (he did NOT enjoy that vet trip...)

  • Poor guy! <3

I have Maddy. She's my stump tail cat. She too it without a tail. Has been for 7 years. She got it amputated because someone abused her to the point where no skin was left on it. Just bone. A four month old kitten!

Glad to here this isn't like that ^-^

Buddy'll be fine with or without. It'll take getting used to is all. :P

  • Poo, thanks. I'm sorry about your kitty, Dreamy. That's really mean of whoever owned her
I hate abusive people. I was considering going into animal cruelty/police work for that reason.
Anyway, yup, I think it'll get better though. At least I hope, :(
