Topic: Zoo's.... Good or Bad? Artical ADDED!!!!

Zoo’s… Good or Bad?

Zoos, are they good or bad? That is the question everyone is asking, or at least, that is what I am asking. EA*Kennel thinks that there are always two side to this it’s a great idea as long as the animals a looked after properly ex- enough room to roam, mental and physical exercise etc. Then theirs the view that all animals should be free and not caged up so. Also, Seremela says that “I love going to zoos but I don't really feel comfortable about the whole thing. The vast majority of animals aren't given as much space as they would have in the outside world. However it makes me feel better if they're being observed or something for research (not experimented on!) or if they're an endangered species the zoo's helping get back on its feet. Jazzes opinion was a little less sophisticated, but proves a point: “zoos are awesome as long as the animals are not just locked up in cages; they have space to move around .â€

  • If the animals are endangerd, I can understand them being in a zoo; not like the animals who arent endangerd.

  • I've only been to a couple of different zoos, but it's obvious that some are better than others. I've never really like the idea of animals like bears, big cats, African animals etc. being kept in captivity, but if they are kept in a large enough enclosure and are happy and healthy I think zoos are great :) They give people an opportunity to see things things they would have little chance of experiencing otherwise. I helps raise awareness and educates people (which I think is especially good for the little kids ^.^ ), as well as helping endangered animals in the case of breeding programs ^_^

I know some zoos also take animals rescued from the black market who would never be able to survive in the wild :)

  • I haven't been to the zoo sence 3rd grade. As long as the animals are taken care of, enough food/water/vet care/space to move around then they're good. Especially if the enclosurs are more like they're natural habitat. Or if the zoo takes care of an animal that was injured/abandond so it couldn't survive in the wild :D

  • Tottaly agree with alot of you.
In the St. Louis zoo though I wasn't very impressed with the bear's
habitat. They kept paceing the enclosure in distress. But I think animal's
are nice in captivity keeps people from "hey I want a pet lion", to maybe
"hey lets go to the zoo and see a lion," or stuff like that.
Of course the main things I want to see in a zoo, is a large enclosure.
Plenty of enrichment objects.
And a enclosure that shows their environment.
Our zoo in my home town is exactly perfect.
And I love going to it.

Yeah, that right there drives me insane. Its worse in petstores, but I won't get into that ><; different subject completely.

Things about zoos that I like:

-Protection from natural preditors
-Educates the public
-Garenteed food and water
-Provides opportunities for people to see animals that they wouldn't be able to see except on TV

They have to have large enclosures and things to stimulate their minds, or I don't like it. I hate small enclosures with nothing to keep them entertained or occupied. I also HATE it when people visiting the zoo throw cigarettes and other trash into the enclosures. I've had to call zoo staff a couple times cause every time I go to the nearest zoo, there's cigarette butts in with the goats and emus. And in a aquarium someone threw one in with a stingray and laughed when it ate it. -_-
    Bye.
  • great. Now the stingrays addictied to nicotine (j/k) Yeah. I can understand that. Just, I dont like zoos all to much. Snakes like anicondas (Been a while, not sure it they have them here) Are in little 5'-5' cages, and were talking, what, 19' long snakes, crammed into a dinky encolosure

  • I know what you mean. I think animals that big deserve all the space in the world, and therefore should be left in the wild unless they're endangered, hurt, etc.
    Bye.
  • Well said, kite. Putting artiacl together now...

  • It depends on the zoo. Where we live the zoos are kept up real well. They have more room than needed, they are feed well and the make it so no animal is alone. For example you will never see 1 monkey. there is always a second to keep them company. The only animals that ever died died of old age (except for a polar bear that some one threw a brick at! ) any way when it comes to good or bad I believe that as long as the animals are taken care of a few zoos are fine and create an educational learning enviornment for young children and maybe some adults too!

  • What does sophisticated mean?

And also, there were several spelling and grammar errors, and it never really got to a point of whether zoos are good or bad.

  • In a part of the book, Life of Pi, the main character talks about how zoos help the animals in protecting their territory because no one goes in, except for the occasional feeder or cage cleaner, but what is bad about that? It compares the life of a human to the life of an animal because, if not opposed, are the same. Most humans don't leave a life of security, a zoo, perhaps, for an animal, to go out there and live for themselves. Sure, we read all the stories, but those are fictional. Also, for those who would like to run into a zoo and let all the animals loose, think about this. Would you like someone to run into your house open the door and go, "You're free now! You can leave this place!" Any sensible human would say, you can't make me leave, this is my house. That is the same with an animal in the zoo. In the wild, animals live lives full of fear and constant defense of their territory. The only reason an animal is skittish when it is sent to a zoo, or a new one, is because nothing is the same. It has to get used to a new place. The only problem is the visitors, us. We are the problems in zoos. People litter, causing an animal to become curious and eat it. A glass bottle might cause some internal bleeding and the animal dies. There are some downs to a zoo, but the animals are comfortable and well cared for. Free food and board, it is like a hotel of someone's dreams.
Zoos, in my opinion, are good, especially after reading this excerpt from Life of Pi.
