Critique on my coloring.

edited November 2007 in Artist Alley
Me and my mom are debating on if we should buy Adobe Photoshop CS3. So we are trying out the 30 day trial, and well I have been playing around with it, getting to know the brushes, and I even decided to color a couple of characters from my little story I'm making. This one is MoonSpark, Im not going to go into details about her story, once I get my whole story done I "may" post it, but for now here is MoonSpark.
<a href="http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2004732825263642812"; target="_blank" class="bb-url"><img src="http://aycu12.webshots.com/image/34971/2004732825263642812_rs.jpg"; alt="http://aycu12.webshots.com/image/34971/2004732825263642812_rs.jpg"; class="bb-image" />

Please critique on the coloring and if you want on the drawing too. ^.^ I had lots of fun coloring this. :D I tried to do some shading, but again I am not familiar with photoshop so I'm getting to know the brushes.

Also if you want a pic, I would be happy to make you one for very cheap, you can either have a lineart or a lineart colored with photoshop, or Paint, just fill this simple form out

Line art form:
breed:
pose:
ref pic:
anything else:

Colored line art:
Breed:
Pose:
Ref pics:
colors:
anything else?:

btw I do best on these breeds:
Wolves o.O (all kinds)
German Shep
herding dogs
huskys
pointers
golden retrievers
setters
labs

and I really do not like to draw little bitty dogs so please, if you want it to look good xP please chose a big dog xD :P

 • it just looks like you dont work with layers, therefore it looks sloppy. make line art one layer, and color seperate.

and save them as png

 • Like Lolo said, layers are your friends. <3 I have CS2, but I can't take screenies, so I'll walk you through some stufft that'll help. <3

Layers
Press F7, if a box appears, keep it. If it disappears, press F7 again. This is your Layers box. There should already be a layer there, with a lock on it called Background. Leave that for now. There are icons on the lower part of the box. I only use the last three there. The middle one (between the folder and the trashcan) is your New Layer button. Use it well. <3 Click it and you should have a layer called Layer One. Go and right click on the layer titled Background, and delete it. Now is the ONLY time you should EVER use the Paint Bucket Tool. Select White and fill in this layer.

Double click the word 'Layer One' and rename it 'Lineart'. This is where your lineart goes. Draw it out however you want. Once that is done, make another layer. Call it something along the lines of 'Base Color'. KEEP THE LINEART LAYER ON TOP! This means you need to either drag Base Color down, or drag Lineart up. Now, since you've said you played with brushes, I'll skip that. Select a large, round soft-edged brush. Figure out which color you want for the main color of your animal/person/whatever. Color the lineart in, but make sure you are on the Base Color layer. This way, even if you color out of the lines, they'll be there.

DO NOT WORRY ABOUT COLORING OUTSIDE OF THE LINES. You can go back and fix it later with an eraser tool. Don't do this now, however, because it'll take more time. Now make a new layer above Base Color. Call it 'Base Color Highlights'. Now pick a light source and find a lighter shade of your base color (the more white this new shade is, the stronger the light source). Go through and color the bits that you THINK should be colored. Again, make sure you're on the Base Color Highlights layer, and don't worry about getting out of the lines. Now, do the same thing as you just did- make a new layer, but call it 'Base Shadows' this time, and then choose a darker color. Do NOT choose black. That's a mistake I used to make. xD Shade in where you THINK there should be shadows.

Done with the shadows/highlights stages? Alright. Go up to whichever layer you have on top, below Lineart. Right click, choose 'Merge Down'. Do the same thing until you have merged together 'Base Shadows', 'Base Highlights', and 'Base Color'. In the end it'll read 'Base Color'. NOW you increase the size to 200%, choose a small, round, soft eraser brush, and erase anything outside of the lineart. Now rename this layer to 'Base Fur - Fin'. Yeah, that's right, your base fur has been finished. <3 Congrats.

Do this as many times as you need to for other colors/markings/etc. Name the first color something like "Blahblahblah* Base"

Naming your layers is not necessary, but it's nice, and helps you stay organized. =3

I'll probably list off a few more tips on Monday or so. =p

*Name off whatever you're working on here. If it's eyes, nose, tongue, paws, etc, put that all on the same layer and call it "Details Blahblahblah*"

**Base / Highlight / Shadow
