Pit Bulls revisited

edited January 2008 in Game Suggestions
Last year someone tried to address this topic, and it got locked. I was hoping we could try discuss this again, albeit more civilly this time?

I have a few requests for my breed. The first is to change the name "pit bull" -- a nickname which is applied haphazardly across many breeds and crosses -- to American Pit Bull Terrier. I have heard the argument "APBT is the same as Pit Bull," but I must disagree. (Just like "shepherd" doesn't necessarily mean GSD, and a MinPin is not a mini Doberman. Its a matter of wanting to be able to take pride in your breed.) All I am asking for is the proper, recognized breed name, as is written on my dog's papers.

I would also like to see the size corrected. As outlined in the <a href="http://ukcdogs.com/RegistrationBreeds.htm"; target="_blank" class="bb-url">United Kennel Club's breed standard for the APBT, the preferred weight for an adult dog in good condition is 30-60 pounds. I have a dog in my kennel which is 106 pounds when converted from the metric system. This is a very large, out-of-standard dog.

Some are going to decry this as nitpicking, but as some of us deal with these dogs in the real world, it does mean something to us. I would just like to see it cleaned up a little bit.

Thoughts? (Nicely? :) )

  • I love Pitbulls some of the best dogs I think as long as you get them trained right and treat them right, But onestly I dont think its a big enough Thing to fix since its just data and there are more important things that should be fixed before name changes. After Some of the bigger problems are fixed I would agree to this.... and for some of the outher breeds to be fixed to.
  • I totally agree with Bahamutt99. I guess you could say we've already discussed this topic.
  • I am not asking that this take precedence over other things that need fixing. It'd be nice if it got fixed before my sponsor runs out next year, though. Either way, for something to get fixed, we have to start with somebody asking. :)
  • Im Not saying that it shouldnt be fixed..... Becuase it should.
  • please fix it.

i know some people don't like APBT's but oh well. I won't say anything about that xD

But say you loved labs, and their name was spelled wrong. You'd want it fixed?

Same deal.

  • It should be fixed, in my opinion

Parker, Boz, Gabby, Asher and Loko are cooler then you.
  • But what if they spelled your name wrong by like one letter,
and said, oh, its just a name.... :?:

I agree Baha... just like how the Timber Wolf is 28kg and the Greyhound is 29kg (or the other way around).
Yeah.
Could you imagine a pit 106 pounds?

  • I can very much imagine one. There are so many overdone dogs out there people are claiming to be pure APBTs.

Just take a look at some classified ads. I can guarantee at least 75% have Razors Edge or some other blue "American Bully" blood in them. They're all mixed breeds.
  • Its just a name =/

It is not just a name. It is a dog. A breed of eleagnce and friendly nature. " Pitbull" makes it sound hillbilly. American Pitbull terrier is a proper title. They are like I said elagent [sp?] And not hillbilly. They deserve a proper name lol :)

  • Inestly im probably sounding like the bad guy and every one is going to hate me for my opinion, but oh well.

If some one spelled my name wrong i wouldnt care it happens all the time. Change the name realy does nothing its still Pitbull with a couple fancy words added to the front and end.

  • Its not a couple of fancy words. Its the proper breed name. Most of the breeds on here have their breed name as recognized by their respective kennel clubs, not a nickname. Why not my breed? Like I said, its a pride thing. Or perhaps a respect thing. I don't get fired up when people call me Bahama or Banana or Bahumbug, although I do point out that those are not my handle. Accidentally mispelling someone's name is not the same as having a continued error and leaving it that way just because you figure its no big deal. The APBT is the APBT. He is not a "pit" or any other figment of somebody's imagination. He has his own name, and I would like to see him called by it.

And again, part of the issue is the size of the dogs in the game. Desired weight for a mature animal in good condition: 30-60 pounds. Weight of "pitbulls" on this game: 100+ pounds.

Not a huge deal to me anymore as I wont be renewing my sponsor. But maybe future players of the game who happen to be afficionados of the breed will get more into the game if they can take pride breeding an old, respectable breed, rather than some nicknamed, oversized street trash.

I agree with you, but considering that there are quite a few misspellings of dog breed names that have yet to be fixed or won't be fixed at all, I doubt this will ever happen.
  • As Edel said; there are many mis-spellings in the dog breed list. Don't quote me on this, but I do believe it is because if they change the name, all the pitbulls bred in the past wont be on the list, therefore not in the search etc...

  • I guess the moral here is to use spell check for things that'll be carved in stone and we'll just have to settle with Pit Bull.
