Proposal to get the population stats removed from breed page

edited April 2006 in Game Suggestions
Alright, as far as I can tell, the ONLY thing population on VP stats do is make people pick out the rarest breeds thinking they can make a quick buck on rare breed pups and leads to a bunch of inbred, poor quality, bred to heck breeds.

So I propose that this particular section is removed from VP, because if it wasn't so prominent on the breed pages people couldn't use it to ruin breeds just because they think they should breed more because there's a low population of the breed.

  • I dont know... :? I know what youre saying (and someone was just talked out of this) but I think its fairly important for people to know. I mean, Im not going to get involved with a breed thats really over-populated and its nice to know how many other dogs there are of the breed your involved with.

On the other hand, if people want to help improve a breed, they could just look at the highest starred dogs and find a breed with 4x4 or less. *shrugs* I dunno... Im interested in seeing other people's opinions though.

BTW Im not voting because I do care about the breeds getting ruined, but I dont necessarily want the population taken off.
  • You could still find out how many there were by using the marketplace to search that breed, but it wouldn't be glaringly obvious to everyone who just clicked the breed page..

I wish people WOULD get involved with overpopulated breeds, they're the ones that need help, not the rare ones.
  • Good point... I guess when I said over-populated breeds, I was thinking about the fact that most of them are already 8x4 or more. I didnt even think about averages and that despite having some exceptional dogs, many of them are in the wrong hands... being bred like mad, un-trained, etc.
  • Exactly.

Maybe if there was a trained dogs percentage on the pages people would realize how bad off some of these breeds really are. For instance I have high starred dogs in German Shepherds, but I release about 20 or more badly bred ones a day. Best way to tell how bad a breed is..look up studs for that breed, if you have 400 studs and only 3 or 4 are trained, that's pretty awful.
  • Wow, I'm torn. On one hand I can't stand seeing people wanting to import, breed and sell "rare" dogs just because they are rare, but on the other hand, it's not fair to say that what those people are doing is "wrong" just because you don't agree with it. I would be heart broken if someone took some of the breeds I'm working on and overpopulated the heck out of them. But at the same time, that doesn't negate what work I have done with the breeds. I can still say that mine are the best of the breed, etc. In addition, I don't know that taking the population scores off of the breed page would help. Like you said, someone could just go to the marketplace and search for the numbers of each of the dogs there to find the rarest ones. That, and population scores are often misleading. The lowest population breeds are very often the ones that have already been taken to 8x4 or higher by a few dedicated breeders. It's the over populated dogs that need the work, as was already said. So I voted for your suggestion of taking the population score off the breed page, for the solely selfish gain of protecting "my" breeds for another day. It is a tricky topic though, and someone still needs to convince me totally one way or the other :)
  • Hmmm, yeah, I think percentage of trained dogs in that breed could be a good replacement. IMO, that would make more sense than the population alone. No matter what people will still claim certain breeds, colors, or whatever to be rare, but hopefully this would put a dent in it. :)
  • well every time someone wants to put a list of what number of dogs are in the breeds up everyone jumps on them saying no it's a bad idea they'll just promote people wanting to overbreed rare breeds.

I get SO many messages from people wanting to buy my 'rare' breed dogs to improve the breed by 'breeding lots so there's lots of them on the game and helping the breed'...which is not helping the breed at all, it's just raising the number of dogs on the game. I really don't understand the whole idea that breeding and breeding dogs to raise the number that's on the game is actually helping the breed.

I really wish people would choose breeds on the game because they actually like them, instead of picking them for what they think will sell best, what they think is 'rare', or something like trying to outdo a well known breeder for no other reason than to just outdo them. The breeds I have are many but I like every single one of them and I chose them because I like them.

I'm not trying to tell others how to play just because I disagree with people breeding out rare dogs to make money or whatever, but I think the population scores give newcomers the wrong idea.

Most...MOST rare breeds are rare because no one wanted them enough to import/work on them, so they won't sell/they won't be used as studs, and it's misleading to new people I think.

Just wanted to clarify I wasn't trying to say anyone's wrong, true I don't like it, but all these poorly bred dogs clog up the marketplace, slow the game down...and I really don't see any good that comes from the population scores.

MOST new people don't know how to search with the marketplace, so yes it would cut down on a lot of people who just click a dog breed and say WOW there's only 50 out of 200000000 dogs that means I could make a lot of money on them. If you search on the marketplace it doesn't show you how many dogs are on the game like the population score does.
  • I like seeing the % but I see your point.

I pick breeds because I like them, am interested in them or like their look, I don't reallyh pay attention to the number of dogs in the game.

I also agree WOS.I own the most fully trained/maxed African Wild Dogs on the game.Only one other person that I know of also has some of the best dogs on the game..( TashaWasha ) They have some very nice dogs too.And I belive they were the first to breed the first 3x4 star dogs of the breed.Belive them and me we have the best dogs of the breed. All the others are untrained and/or inbred.I would love to see the number of trained/maxed dogs and the high stared dogs of my breed.I decided to start working on because I of my love for African Wild Dogs, not because I believe I could money.(I don't sell any of dogs to people who to breed, only to my friends that I know will take great care of the dogs.) I'm up to 3x4 stars now and still trying to breed better dogs.Only one of my dogs has been overbred and I bought him that way.I even bought as many of his pups I could and released them.

I'm saying something!) I agree and disagree with WoS.

First off, I never even realized players looked at the population to find rare dogs. You all just taught me something new...
Second, I hate seeing all dogs (rare and non-rare) over bred and such. But I think even if you did take off the population thingy people would still over breed the rare dogs when they see a new breed was created. But if removing the population thingy will help in some way, I would like to see it gone as well!

  • I personaly voted no. Its not going to matter if they are removed. People will still look up the breed in the market place to find out how many are on the game so its the same thing as looking at the breed page. I find that most people that do all that lets import rare dogs is because they have never heard of the dog and there for think right off the bat that its rare. I have actually gotten messages about my GSD's asking if they are some new rare breed that the person should get into to make lots more on the game. Turns out she has never heard the term German Shepherd Dog she thought they were called German Herders *rolls eyes*

Vixen Kennels brands star with VX .
  • i totally disagree, because my whole kennel is rare big (strong or fast ) rare dogs, i like breeding for colors and stars. however i keep al my rare dogs with one partner, and privatly breed them only when the dogs have been trained, then i will refresh the lines after two litters, start over from scratch with on breeding partner nad keep the pick of th elitter from the previose line, to keep some of my hand picked blood lines strong. also on the flip side a breed like border collies is less healthy than what was three weeks ago the rarest breed portugese pointer. all the pointers i have breed and come across were well trained and well bred most border collies are victums of puppy mills so i am sry to say but i disagree. also most breed are rare for a reason because no one likes them that much so i will keep all my pups i will never release any just because they did not sell.
